Business Prospertv.
The prospects of a brisk and extensive business, we
are happy to say, are unusually encouraging, Our
numerous stores well Glled with large and assorted
atocka, the busy and stirring movements of our mer.
chants, the high prices they pay sot produce, and the
disposition already evinced by theii country customers
to be more lilieral in their purchase*, aro cheering'y
ominous, ami furnish a certain prestige, of what we
have not enjoyed in Macon for aome nine, a busy and
prosperous season,
Prom the West wc leant sad tidinba of the ravages
of tbo worm and catterpiller, and we have no doubt,
that the crop of cotton will bo very materially shorten
ed by these destructive inspets. Hut while the aggie
gate crop in the United Stales wilt undoubtedly he
short, the crop in Georgia will lie fullv equal irt *n
average one. We know that new-paper eortellpnii
dents have represented the crop as having been Icltt of]
a half by the worm; and they have, without perhaps
i- Mg it stated the truth; for If the worm had not
■ed the yield would have been overwhelming ;
i„king the previous yeara aa a standard, wb have
, . hesitancy in saying, the present crop will be an
iversge one. Os this fact we have no doubt, as well
lioin personal observation, as from the statements of u
number of our country friends, who can ho implicitly
-, ti< upon Up to Monday last, we have had an un
interrupted period of five weeks without a drop of
rain, just such a harvest as the planter would have
most desired for picking, and saving his cotton. The
consequence is, that the cotton that has been picked
out, is unusually clean and free of stain, and the sta
ple fine. The samples We have seen, would be classed
a, “midling fair.” according to the Liverpool classifi
cation, and so equal and uniform in quality, that hall
a cent would cover the extremes of prices.
Wo anticipate a Urge increase over our last Vctr’s
receipts. The rivers arb low and innavigable, and in
all probability will continue so lor soem time ; while
the great facilities furnished u in the way of transpor
tation by our two railroad lines, the one running
through our moat fertile countiea to almoat the ex
tieme boundary of the State, and the other furnishing
a speedy egress of a few hours to the coast, will give
us an advantage that will be mo6t sensibly beneficial
to u*. As for prices, the price* current of our differ
ent cities will ahuw, that Macon is one of the best, if
not the best, selling market in the State. Our buyers
arc proverbial for giving long prices; their correspon
dents say. ruinous prices. Tot cotton; and this is evi
denced by the fact.that few, if Shy. hive become rich
by buying cotton. There is every Inducement for the
planter to bring his cotton to Macon. If he Wishes to
sell here, he can get the highest puces, and if he pre
fers forwarding his cotton to Savannah, he can gtt it
ibero in two days. Our railroads are amply supplied
with locomotive power, and any number of freight
cars; so that delay ia a contingency not to be appre
hended.
As to our market so- supplies of every description,
we have no hesitation in saying, that there is no city
in the Stute bettei stocked. We have a number of
new stores, and many others yet to he opened, and
these, togeihe- with our old established dealers, will
furnish such com|ietition, that purchases may lie as
sured of getting goods at low pices. for particulars,
we refer our countiv fiiends to our advertisements, and
we assure them by calling dpon the advertisers, they
cannot fail to be suited either in ‘he quality of the ar
ticle wanted, or the price asked
Tlic Mews from Weiit o.
The glorioua achievements of our army in Mexico
will he found in another column. The a--ault upolt
Monterey, and the conquest ol the city wuh the sur
rounding heights, fortified as they were by nature and
art, will rank among the molt brilliant exploits of
modern limes. Wimftt Was the'hero of thte fight.—
Old ‘-Rough and Ready” had acquired glory enough
on the R io Grande, and COUld well afford an opportu
nity to a brave colleague, who was under a clotfd, to
retrieve himseff, end vindicate his wentrd and well es
tablished fame. They have both won impeiitbable
honor. Taylor has confirmed the reputation he bad
already acquired, and the gallant Worth haa amply
and nobly repstred tire error, which in an evil hour he
hastily atnl unreflectingly Committed. He is the
“Bayard” of the Army, sansptur sans reproath.
The terms of capitulation seem unreasonably fiberal.
and have been the subject of aome strictures. We
must bear in mind, however, that wc are not privy to
the circumstances that induced them, anJ that those
who Defoliated thi m. are infinitely better qualified
than we are. to judge of then propriety end reasona
bleness.
