THF. TEA TABLE ;
OH,
A COLLECTION OF WOMEN.
’l ire the collection docsbegin,
flume one ipvites her neighbours in.
To take with her a dish ol tea ;
Made of the finest of bohea.
Attd when the ladies thus have met,
Then just at night the table’s set;
They gather round with decent care,
Come you’re the oldest...vousit there;
Oh, that’s no matter, sit down, do,
So alter compliments are through
Some one begins to talk....another,
Strikes in some notes above the other;
Next then, the third, fourth, fifth, so
round,
E neb strives the others voice to drown;
None stop to hear what others say,
Nor can they hear themselves....yet
they
Kept on in this exalted tone,
Together all—yet all alone.
The first is done, the next hut half.
The first now thinks it time to laugh,
And so beging,te he, te he,
Another joins as loud as she.
Tim’ cannot give a reason whv,
’ Pis better then to laugh than cry i
The laugh increases, till however,
One strains above the rest....I never?
I’m quitfc discourag’d....I dont see,
You ever mean to visit me :
My. husband now is gone from home,
So uow I think you ought to come ;
You, cry the rest, you ow’d before,
We saw you last, two visits more ;
And you owe me, and you owe me,
So round it goes....yet none agree ;
And when the long dispute is past,
Nothing concluded on at last.
It sqems amazing strange to me,
They feel so well lor drinking tea ;
For if a foreigner should come,
lle’d think they’d all been drinking
rum.
A little child begins to cry,
Whist, says its mother, give it pve ;
The resthome flocking and arc fed,
With pye and cakes and gingerbread
Whilst says another keep awav,
Hunt you know better—you should
stay ;
Till we have done ; the child altho’
Determines that he will not go ;
Well stuy here then, if you’ll be still?
(The child wont promise that he will)
He sees the cafe and layeth hold.
The mother now begins to scold;
The child don’t care but lets her teaze,
And seizes at a plate of cheese
Do give me that—I will have some.
The biggest piece that lies here, mum;
Now seeing he dont mind commands,
She seizes him and holds his hand
And says to smooth the matter o’er.
You never acted so before j
My child's not well I certain know,
If well he’d not have acted so ;
1'hen sonic ironical complaint,
Answers instead of a restraint.
Says one I think the time is come.
So says the next we must go home
And as they gather round the door,
•l Wey tune up louder than before ;
M ben will you come! I am airaid,
My visit will not be repaid.
S- all invite, and all reply,
1 o visit then, soon mean to trv ;
; bey flock utl home hi usual form,
And the next day there comes a storm.
DUELLING.
The great increase of the practice
of duelling has very justly excited
considerable indignation in the pub
lic mind, and called forth the inter
ference of some of our legislatures, &
other public bodies of men, in the
hope, mav it not be vain ! of arrest
ing its further progress. Societi
ought to frown down the perpetrators
of this outrage upon all laws, human
and divine. Among the victims to
the perverted idea of honour, which
is the parent of duelling, may be e-
uumerat&d some of the most valua
ble men this country has produced.
It is not long since, there were ac
counts iti a single gazette of three du
els, two of them fatal.
The reader will doubtless learn
with horror, that in the reign of Hen
ry IV of Fi ance, which extended to
twentv-onc years, no less than four
thousand persons > ere murdered in
France in this summary mode. So
predominant was the rage for duel
ling at that era, that a gentleman who
had never fought a duel, was but
lightly esteemed in the fashionable
world. And the horrible infatuati
on extended so far, that he who had
killed three, or four, or live, was in
much higher reputation, than he who
had only killed one or twft.
the Globe which has not be

ason to hope that that destructiV'
iisorder, the small-pox, will at lengti
otally disappear. This, indeed,wouh
peedily be the case, if all persons
ouId be bro’t to the use of vac
cination, as a prevention of the
small-pox.
Facts, seem to render it highh
probable, that the small-pox a disor
der unknown to former times, cairn
to us from the brute creation. It is
found that kinepock matter may, at
any time, be produced by inoculating
cows with the small-pox. A lew
years ago a Mr. Larrobe ol Vermont,
whose house had been used as a hos
pital for the small-pox, found that his
cows, by being milked by persons
having the small-pox, or conversant
with those having it, took the disor
der and '.hat pock appeared on tin
teats ol the cows. The infection ta
ken from these pustules on the teats
of the cows, would undoubtedly have
been the true kine-pock matter ; the
malignant nature of the small-pock
being changed by coming to u»
through the cow, whose nature is
mild. In the same way, original
kine-pock matter may undoutedly
be obtained at any time by inoculat
in': the teats of cows with the small-
