Medical Impostor!
ON the night of the 20th of July
last Dr. David T. W. Cook eloped
from his place of residence in the dis*
trict of York, South Carolina, where
he had for some time attempted tb
palm himself on the public as a Phy
sician and Surgeon.
The subscribers, actuated by prin
ciples of patriotism and philanthro
py, think it their duty to make thb
iollowing statement of facts, for the
correctness of which they pledge
their reputations for veracity, and e-
very claim to the respect of their fel
low citizens at large.
Dr. David T. W. Cooke was rai
sed in the village of Charlotte, North
Carolina. After receiving a smat
tering of education, he obtained
through the influence of his friends
a subaltern commission in the feder
al aritW. While in the army he mar
ried an amiable young woman of con
siderable property in the county of
Currituck, in the state of North Ca
rolina. Alter wasting hi r property
and contracting debts to the amount
of about fifteen hundred dollars, he
removed to Franklin county, lrorti
whence he eloped in arrears about
twelve hundred dollars, leaving his
wife with two children, and in ex
pectancy of another, to subsist on.
the bounty of her friends or to perish.
His wife and three children are yet
living, and obtain their subsistence
through the munificence of her affec
tionate mother. He next returned
to Charlotte, where he spent three
or four years in idleness and the most
wanton dissipation. After contract
ing debts in Charlotte w hich he was
unable to discharge, he took shelter
in York district, South Carolina, and
commenced the study and practice
of physic. From this plate he elo
ped in July last, indebted not less
than one thousand dollars. In ad*-
dition to the audacity with which he
incessantly practised his fraudulent
and swindling arts, he has seduced
from his friends and business in this
district a young man of sober and in
dustrious habits, by the name of
Green B. Hudson. This unfortuna f <?
voting man has yet to learn that no
degree of confidence is to he reposed
in a man who is well known never
to have possessed the smallest spark
ol friendship, or any of those agreea
ble qualifications which constitute the
character ol a gentleman or good ci
tizen. Immediately before his flight.
Dr. Cooke, unuer specious but false
pretences, procured certificates, ex
pressive ol his medical acquirements,
from several respectable citizens of
this district, one ol whom has affixed
his signature to this publication.
Doctor Cooke is of the common
size and of very handsome figure.
His nose is somewhat aquiline and
his complexion florid. His eyes are
small, ot a light blue arid very quick,
with an uncommon dimple on his
dun. He plays extremely well on
the fiddle and is very fond of frolics.
He is boastful,impemnent and assum
ing in company, and withal addicted
to drinking.
