to the credit of a writer different I v .situ

die moral and literary circles. The Ian
guage employed is t haste, and some
times elegant; the style is open, dear
and perspicuous, often bordering on the
margin of poetical fiction, of which the
following elfusion, describing the fond
ness and faithfulness of his wife in the
hour of afflict inn, is an example : and is
at the same lime highly eoinpliiue.ntai V
to the softer m x, whose constancy, virtue

“ At my sentence, I had many reflec
tions to scutch my very soul. I was m-
int*.I in character, degraded in mv pro*
lessiun, and stigmatized with runic.—
T: > 0 who should have boen mv friends,
stood aloof from and abandoned me ; my
enemies thickened round me. and caliun
ni ited me unpunished; and the very cren
tuns who had profited by n childish
confidence that had ruined me, joined
blushlcssly with the world, in reviling
.ind despising me. In the desolation of
my fortunes, and the blasting of my
hopes, there was one whose destitution
was iiid'-otified with mine. Like a soli
tary flower on some lately blasted heath,
with no glowing litid to cheer, and no
balmy detv to nourish it, tiie idol of my
soul stood mourning over my fortunes.—
The sneer and seolf of the inhuman fell
around her, twit) her path was musical
with the hissing of the unfeeling. The
situation of my vv ife, unprotected and ex
posed to insult as she was, gave the deep
est agony to the very ligaments of mv
soul. Through all the horrors of a dieail
fill and ungenerous persecution, aw aken
ed on mv part hy a puerile impiodence :
in the doleful solitude of my infamy,
when all besides deserted me, and cen
sured even the exercise of sympathy to-
wards me; when apathy used its elo
quence to wean and estrange her from
me; dishonored as I was, she still adher-
r.j to my fortunes, and even in the hel|>-
I.-S5 hour of condemnation, would not,
could not, he constrained to abandon me.
Although every worldly feeling arrayed
itself against her, yet she clung to me the
closer, from my very destitution.
My only fiiend—constant in adversity,
as in prosperity—despising the censure
of her friends for her adherent.e, and tiis
regarding the pitiful malevolence of the
world ;—tutvaids such an invaluable lie
iug, whom I had miserably degraded

Speaking of sentences as ineffectual
for tire prevention of crime, the writer
happily illustrates his text in the follow

he was made acquainted on his Introduc

“There were eleven convicts in the
room in which I was placed. It was

They saw flight and austerity in me—).

One of them, at length addressed mo,
and invited me to sit down upon a bench,
which he politely l anded, and 1 Accor

This work, tltongh generally of great
interest, possesses many passages of ele
gant writing, which we should he pleased
to copy, could we do so, without infring
ing on ills rights of the publisher and
uuhur, who are entitled to a different
kind of patronage for their labours.—
Annexed is an appendix, consisting of
biographical nt tices of convicts of a sin
gular character who fell under tiie obser
vation of oar author, while auflnhahitant
of the prison, which is well calculated
to excite the curiosity and awaken tire
sympathies of those w ho have been more
highly favored of lleavcrr, and which
with the whole comprises an interesting
volume.—Throughout, the book is iirter-
rsed with an imony, and pungen sar-
casm, which we arc soiry to notice, as wo
think it does not enhance the value of
the whole, and probably may have a tejr-
denry to lessen its weight in the public
scale, and detract from the confidence
otherwise tine to it. On the whole we
ate of an opinion that it reaches at leas;
mediociily, anil certainly is no disgrace
to our literary character. As most of its
topics are Iola.I, it ts best calculated ler
the meridian ol New Y'ork, where we un
derstand, it has had a rapid sale ; though
it must find flivtrr and a general perusal
in every part of the country. Whilst
reading it, the mind will naturally he led
to sympathize with the author, anti tlic
feulurg heart cannot but larnet t that the
talents he evinces, have not been em
ployed on the side of virtue, and thereby
hav e escaped the ignominy which clouds
them by reason of theif being debasetj
and prostituted.
Judge, or no Judge ?—Parker No ye?,
bomg appointed a supreme judge in N.
Hampshire, in the room of Woodbury,
elected Governor, declines to accept the
office. He is the third person selected
for tiro station wlro has refused it! It is
iiot singular that so much difficulty isex.-
perienced in filling an office of power
and trust, because the pay is loo near to
reward a man of laients. Economy is
one tiring—niggard sordidness another.
Niggardness (says Addison) is no!
good husbandry, nor generosity profu

made a national one.
