4 T the commencement of the present year,
when the Powelton Academy was about
7o go into operation, under immediate
charge of Mr. Otis Smith, the Tfastees autho
rised by the most approved testimonials of sci
entific gentlemen, ot Mr. Smith's qualificati
ons, offered to the public, indpnilicularly to pa
rents and guardians, the I nsiitution over which
they have the honor to preside, as one entitled
to their pai ticular attention and liberal patron-
age.
Uader the direct superlntcndance of Mr
Smith, the Institution has been in prosperous
operation for nearly one quarter, «nd we con
ceive it an act of injustice to the public, and
withholding from Mr. S. as well as a depaiture
from our duly as public agents, not to pursue
this coarse of public advertisement, ami again
to renew our offer, to the public of the very
superior «ervices of Mr. S as an instructor of
youth—His opportunities, aided by his high
grade of i.denis to teach render him very hii
perim* to many whose celebrity as teachers
have acquired f >r them a high character be
lore tin* public.
e believe Mr. S well qualified to* instruct
in every branch of education taught even in
Gollegnue courses, and led authorised to say
'j* til* public that we stand pledged lor his per
for in a lice to the satisfaction of the most scru
pulous, in a degree rarely excelled and never
before experienced in our Institution.
In tli'8 pledge we woufT? not be understood
to detract from, or offW injustice to tin* indivi
dual merits of many tear hers wr have had the
g< od lot tune to employ, lor many of them we
feel the Inchest esteem and veneration. Mr

among w hom are a number of young genife-
nieiij far udvanccd in the study of the *ci» nres
making w nli the greatest ease rapid advance-
: in branches the most aliMruse—To the
pupils uiuh r Mr- SV charge, application to
Books is made lather an interesting amuse
ment, than an irksome employment Indeed
is school bears a stronger resemblance to a
happy family than otherwise ; col lection is of
r »re occurrence if ever at all inflicted ; he ve
ry happily supercedes it by repeated approba-
ti m and rewards of merit, thereby keeping
alive one continued excitement and laudable
mutation No day is lost to the student—to
a large and respectable Sunday School, where
i exertion i* spared to advance its solid be
fits, are added several other religious assn-
itions, ill wlii h rational instruction isamal-
,mated in one uninterrupted effort to do good.
In offering a participation of these advantages
to the community hi general, wc feel actuated
iy no motive, other than a laudable desire to
Jo good, by an endeavor to be as extensively
tiselul as possible. Every requisito assistant
the growth of the School may authorise, "il

The local and i elativc situation of our vil
