THK ADDRESS TO TIIK PlOPLB*
At tin; late* Whip Convention, a Committee was ap
pointed to write an address to the people of Georgia.
This duty lias been discliaigod, and the address will be
toopd in our paper lo*day, commencing on our first page.
We invite, not only the Whigs of Georgia, !o |>cru*o it*
bu*—‘Confident that it spoaks nothing but what will
meet with the approbation of the great mass of our citi.
n-ns—we invite all\o peruse it. The subject* touched
upon in it, are ail of groat importance to our people,
and as they have already had the Democratic Address
to the Democratic Party, they will bo able, with all the
lights before them, to decide which causj best deserves
their support. Truly it is time that every voter in
Georgia should culmly survey the ground before hi in
and witliout prejudice or party bius, determine for h in.
acif, as to Ins future political course. Should he in this
examination satisfy himself, that what our opponents
say of the Whig Party ami their measures, iitrue, then
Jet Inin an. \ himself with the Democracy, and at the
ballet box let his vote tell against us ! Hut should lie
be satisfied that the Whigs are in the rig A/ track— tint
their measures, both .State and Ftderal, are best calcu
lated to promote the true interests of the people—Hint
they have wisdom and honesty enough to manage the
government without entailing additional burthens up
on the people—and that burthen** whic t the people are
already compelled to bear, will he removed at as early a
day as possible from their shoulders—if they believe
this, then lot them rally as one tnan, regardless of party
influence, party associations, or party trammels, and, by
every honorable effort, strive to promote the succes of
our candidates. "Let justice be done, though the hcav
s do full.**
The subjects touched upon in the Committee's ad
dr sr. are all of them important ones. First, the atten
tion of the people is called to haute concerns. As briefly
possible, have the Committee dwell upon this very
interesting and important part of their address ; and
then, taking up llio gauntlet which was thrown down
by our adversaries, they have noticed the Tariff, the
mdification of the Presidential veto, the establishment
of a Bank ot the U. States, and the distribution of th<
proceeds of the public lands. In addition to these, tlu
Committee have not allowed to pass by, without notice,
that most important subject for consideration, at the
present tim«, the District System- We are pleased
to sec that this is done, for it is highly important that
upon so grave a subject as much light ehould be shed,
as is poesil#e—particularly too, as it is now well un
derstood that the candidates for Governor occupy differ
ent positions upon it; one of them, Mr. CoorEit, strong
ly opposed to districting the State, according to the
act of Cmigres**, and the other, Mr. Crawford, advoca
ting the inoasuie. Thu view taken of the subject in
the address, will therefore be read with interest.
The election is now near at hand. Both parties have
had, and will continue to have, a fair hearing before the
people. Upin their respective merits, let them rise ol
fall! In a minor tv, during nine.tenths of our political
career, we feel that wo can remain there, submitting
calmly to the people'*./?#/, exercising only those ri serv.
oil riguls, which nro secured by our excellent Govern,
meiihjtotlic minority. But, our anticipations are briglu
that, in a minority, we no longer are. We feel confi
dent, that Crawford and Stephens are favorites of the
people, and that the first Monday in October next, will
place the Whig Parly in the ascendent. Further will we
Hueven Hum tli.s, uiid say, feel confident that, in 1*311,
tic freemen of Georgia will bear aloft to victory, the
banner of that great American Statesman, who, at
lut farm, at Ashland, now rests after thirty odd years of
publ.c service, dunug which ho achieved for himself a
uamc, which, so long as the “ stars and stripes" do wave
on our national ensign, will be revered and cherished
by millions of freemen.
U* The following notice from the Hon. Tito*. Bi t-
llr Kim;, to the committee of twenty-one, will, as a
nutter of course, supersede the suggestion made in
this paper, last week, that the committee assemble here
on the first Monday in September next. SATURDAY
the NINTH of SEPTEMBER* is the day named for
the Committee to assemble, at which lime we hope it
will be convenient for nil of them to attend.

Canton, Cherokee, Aug. 21, 18 IB.
Dear Sir :—Since I wrote to you last, I have pas-
sctl through Meriwether, DcKnlb, Gwinnett, Forsyth.
Cobh, and into this county ; and from nil accounts, the
prospects ol the Whig parly nre indeed cheering-—far
beyond any idea I hud beforu leaving homo. In Mori-
wether, llio Wh gs have not their candidates out yet,
but nre preparing to bring them out with full confidence
of success. The Whigs of Coweta have a full team
out, nml, with %i old North Carolina," as good and as
true a district as there is in Georgia, will carry t loir
t.cket by a handsome majority. They contemplate
havingu large meeting for political d.scussion the last
of this month, tyul Mr. Stephens and other gentleni'Mi
are expected to be present to address them. It is to
be a meeting ol both parties. In Heard, I learn that
our worthy, and late Representative and Senator, B
I). Johnson, s again a candidate, with every prospect of
success, carrying with him other good and trow Wing*.
It is said that he has taki.ii the stump, and is winning
sttll mote the favorable opinion of the people of Heard,
by ins plain statement of fncts, and exposition ol the
humbtiggery practised upon them by the Ln-ofoco
Democratic Legislators. In DeK» b, the Whigs have
three candidates out, with fine prospects of success —
and in Gwinnett, there appears to be no duubl of the
success of the entire Whig ticket by a majority not be
fore given. Thus fur I have not heard the first thing to
dampen the hope Hut the Whig party will succeed, out
and out, in October, while I have heard every thing
to warrant the most extravagant calculations.
Mr. Stephens is overturning Modern Democracy,
and earning for liunseif a character and standing
among the people far beyond the brightest auticipa
lions of his most enthusiastic friends, if l have not
been most egregiously misinformed, wherever ho has
been, he has not only made votes, and many of them for
liiniself, hut he has opened the eyes of tl»e people. He
is so liberal, sc frank, and so honest, in addressing
them, that they are brought to reflection—they see how
they have been humbugged, rode and ruined by their
Democratic leaders, and they not only support him, but
Crawford, the Legislature, anti all. In several places,
the effect ho lias produced is wonderful, and had I not
the revolution •(' 1840 in my mind, I should be slow to
believe, I tell you now, and I teil you again, that in
thissection of tie .State, 1 have never known the pros
pects so bright. ] do not hear of one Wh g who will
not support Cravford ; all arc enthusiastically attached
to him—while, oil the other hand, 1 hear, to use the
btngungo of one of my informants, there nro "lots and
cords" that will not support Mr. Cooper, and many of
them arc men ol jntcl iigence and standing, and some
of them pmmineit men in their counties. In ouu dis
trict of Owinm.Mt, whero there is a largo Democratic
vote, I was inform'd by at) iiitell.gent, respectable gen-
i Ionian, that Ckaaatord would get fire out of seven of
the Dem icratic volt. In this county, within the space
of a mile, I was informed, and the individuals wero na
med and counted, lit a gentleman of respectability, one
whom I know well and cannot doubt, that there are
thirteen D^iuocrats around him, who would not support
Cooler, but are the wannest kind of Crawford men.
So they go. Once more* 1 any, Cherokeo will do her
part. She will do better than she ever h.is don**, and if
our Whig friends in tho “Cotton licit," and other por
tions of the State, will arouse themselves, he up and a
doing—that is, distharge their duly to their country and
themselves—they cannot but triumph by a large ma
jority. Let them go among tho people, invite discus*
siou, present tacts to them, reason with them, show
them how they have been brought almost to the brink
of Repudiation by the most miserable and rotten legis
lation that has ever cursed nuy country ; and that tins
has been the fruit of placing in power modern Democ-
racy and Democrats of the present day, and my word for
it, the people, tho patriots of the country will rally to
their standard, nml alter the first Monday ill October
next, they may return again “to the plough," with the
happy consuiatioe that their Srato is again in the
hands o| able, skilful and patriotic pilots—that modern
Democracy no longer rules—but that wisdom, modern-
don. justice, w.l be the con 'rolling jioirers, prom.sing,
as they do, prosperity and happiness to all.
O' The crowded state of our columns prevents our
communicating this week, in the Kditorial wav, with
our readers, upoi several topics of interest to the pen.
pie. We yield though our columns to our correspoii.
dents with pleasure, and invite attention to their arti-

utterly unfounded, nml incapable of proof, and lisa been
made in the hope that its boldness may win belief, where
its proof shall fail of producing it. The statement in a

Of the member* of that Convention, very many voted
for the pn.-sage of that hank charter. James Madison ws*
likewise a member of that Convention and sanctioned
tho second hank charter. John C. Calhoun, whose
claims they urge upon the people of Georgia, was tho
author of that Bank. Crawford, I/nvmlcs, McDuffie,
Gallatin, Forsyth, Lumpkin, WiJde, Cuthhert, Gov.
Clark, Gov. McDonald, and a host ol distinguished men
dcre Hie supporters of that Bank; and yet this com-
nut tee, Hie mere creatures of political excitement, hav»
assumed to pronounce as unconstitutional, an iiistilii-
lion which such m«*ii have declared otherwise. Really
it is the sport of the I*.gm.es at war U|»on tho giant".
But look at the opinion* of some of Hus Committee.
In 18B1, resolution* were introduced into the Georgia
Legislature declaring this same hank unconstitutional!
JOSEPH DAY voted against them, thereby affirm.ng
ii* constitutionality. In 1822, resolution* passed the
Georgia Legislature declaring Hus same bank conititu-
tionaL They passed Hie House of Representative*
without a dissenting voice against them ; IRBY HUD
SON was a member of that body ; was present at Hie
vote, and never so much as opened Ins mouth against

But the committee have descended to moralize up
on banks, and the love of money ! They snv that tho
"establishment of a bank is giving incorporated power to
u-div.dual wealth"—"Hie only nucleus around which
the aristocracy can rally i* money"—“The Republican
party are opposed to Midi a policy." Now look »o the
lacis connected with the persons of Hi s committee, who
talk bo morally to us about banks and wealth. IRBY
HUDSON in now nml has been a bank director with-
out intermission, for more than a quarter of a century
past. Joseph Day was last year, it lie is not now Pres
ident of that broken, rag money concern, the Monroe
Railroad and B inking Company ,.md he has stock in the
Central R.nlioad an i Banking Company 1° the amount of
TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. In that same bank,
I see that SOLOMON COHEN, owns stock to the
amount of 15,2(1)— and hi the State Bank to the amount
ut $2,500—making the neat little sum of $17,700 ! B*.

will be very much d uiitiislied. Thest gentlemen pros,
per when their funk-rags depreciated below par, are
flooding the country; when they are getting beleud
discounts, and the people at largo cannot get them.
No wonder that this ccniin ttee bate such a Im y dread

truth of this, I will add, that 1 have just heard a staunch
Democrat ray that himself and six or seven of his
neighbors, (all Democrats) would vote for Mr. Stephens;
and, strange a* it may appear, the most of this chat ge
was effected by hi* conclusive and powerful nrguinent*
on tho Tariff, and forcible illustrations of Hie beneficial
effect* of Hie Whig policy oil this question, and the ru
iiious consequences of that of the Demoarats. Ho told
U»o peoplu (ami proved it too) that on Hie subject of a
Bank and a Tariff for revenue, lie was treading in the
footsteps af Washington, Madison, and a majority ol
the members of Hie Convention who framed the Consti.

School—that ho had no sympathy, no kindred feeling
with Hits modern Democracy, that had tho unblushing
impudence to accuse Gen. Washington of being Hie
lir^t to lay violent hand* on the Constitution ol ho*
country in sunclu n.ng tho charter ol the U. S. Bank.
Ho concluded hv asking Mr. Stile* if heand In* party
were opposed to the principles of Washington and
Madison oil these great questions ; and, calling upon
the people to rally around the standard of Washington
and Madison, ami no longer oppose the principles ol
these great sages and patriots. Ho took his seat in

The people are honest here: all they want is correct

The great Rucker Convention has sent forth to the
world, its crowning fame, in the shape of on address to
the Democratic party of the Sta'e. It appears over the
signature of Henry K. Jackson, Joseph Day, Irby llud
ton, William C. Daniel, (whetIter of Cainle u or Hill
not stated,) and Solomon Cohen ;—three of these gen
tlemen were very recent deportees from the wh g party,
and .as was to have hern anticipated, have occupied the
greatest portion of the address, in deify mg themselves,
demonstrat tig their own consittmcy, and assailing their

which they are prepared to make. They declare that
there are but few point* iu issue between the two great
