THE SOUTHERN HISTORICAL
AND
LITERARY MAGAZINE.
PROSPECTUS.
HIDE originators of this work believe that the field forlitt-
X rary exertion and infiueuve, in our country, is every day
growing wider and wider; and they uie willing to occupy «|
least a portion oftlie ground, which seems lo invite labourers.
Tliu chief object which they have iu view, is to aid in vindica
ting for the SoutliCMi Stales that literary position which, it is
believed, they are qualified lo assume. 'They design sieo,
through this chauuel, to point out the resources aud defend
tho interests of the South, to represent with truth the clmrae*
ter and condition oftlie people, and lo luruish increased occa
sion for intellectual effort. With these views, they have
sought to onlist in the undertaking the heal tuleot ofthe whole
•South; and they feel, thut they can appeal with someconfi.
delicts to their fellow citizens for support and co-operation.
'The work will beS}uthcrn—it will be the organ ofasec*
lion; but in no nui row spirit of hostility to eny portion of out
country. Justice aud candour towurds all, will govern in
course; and it will steadily pursue the sacred aims of Truth.
There is need, especially in this day of cheap literature, for
stern uud discriminating criticism. Manliness aud originality
ofthought—as well as sound morals—are io danger of being
crushed under tho mass of trashy or corrupt publications, bota
foreign and domestic, with which the press teems. They calk
loudly for some during uud independent censor, who will lay
on the lush of severe but just criticism, "without fear or fa
vor," and who will guard the interests of literature against
those influences ofthe publishing houses of thecountry which
through niuguzine und newspaper puffing, confer so many
false reputations on worthless volumes, and corrupt the very
sources ol u well regulated and wholesome public opinion.—
We therefore avow at the outset, that we intend to deal with,
these authors, publishers and hooks, with n severity only lin*
ited lo our abilities, uud a proper regard for the courtesies dus
to an enlightened community.
We know and feel that our literature is young, and hitherto
hut too imitative. Nevertheless that very vouth hits its ad-
vantages, and we shall endeavor to give them full play, by ca*
courngiug fresh uud vigorous exhibitions of the mind of our
own country.
Thai this is pre-eminently Uie land of original thought, out
Patent Office, our w orkshops, our fields and our rivers abun
dantly illustrate. In the Fine Arts, American genius hsa
produced works of which any nation might be proud. Wa
ure already rivaling old Europe in every department c finvei-
tion, save only in that of Literature. Even in this, an indepen
dent ussertiou ofthought and feeling has commenced, which
the American position uud character demand, and uie calcu
lated to develope. Men here stand to tacli other in new and
advanced relations. Any expressions thut ahull be true to thoas
conditions, must give our literature new and original formic*
It will accordingly be one ol the cherished objects ol oor<
Magazine, to foster, by ull tlie means in our power, every im
pulse of native and original genius.
While nothing of a seatarian or partisan clinructcr will b#
admitted into our pages, we shall by no means shrink from
discussing religious uud political topics. 'They involve the
highest interests of man, and atpiesent.iuorethuu nt any past
period, attract the serious attention of all reflecting minds.

character ofthe Army and Navy, willcluim for both senicesa.
