in 1345, g.wo so liandsomo a majority to Governor I
Crawford.
Of the democratic candidate, wo shall first say a few
word*. This gentleman, Mr. Towns, has already rep
resented Georgia in the Congress of the United Stairs.
He did so as a Democrat, and was mainly distinguished
for standing up to his parly, and Mr. Van Buren, on ev
ery occasion. Of pleasant, popular manners, he is, in
a blackguard, a portion of Ins own party voting tor
his expulsion, and only fourteen out of forty-seven Sen-
ators voting agamst it , 1 lud hoped that a newspaper
reply would not from shame have been given to a com
niumcation in which tin* epithet of falsehood had been
too plainly given to linn to bo misunderstood either by
himself or any oueeLo ; bti» tlrs fire eater has skulked
behind his dignity — a shield too thin to protect bun
from the contempt which honorable men ol a'l parties
must feel for such a contemptible being. And with
a popular canvass, father a formidable adversary j but if j|„, ht , charges branded on his brow, I leave him to era\vI
from these personal advantages, any Whig expects li
beratily of sentiment or action in h;s political course as
a representative, judging from his former course, lie
will be very much deceived. Mr. Town* is a parlizan
-—one of the old Van Buren stamp—and olio who, at
all hazards, is ever ready to advance h s parly's inter-
crests. IDs democratic friends will support him, and
support him warmly mo —let tiie Whigs therefore ral
ly to the polls, and as they can do it, defeat him by
their u**ual majority !
And for what and whom are the Whig, called upon
to rally in this contest I First, to maintain their popu
lar ascendency in the district—and second, to advance,
and stand up like true men to their principles. It was
truly glorious to them when they defeated a new light,
Mr. Chappell, in 1811. and it will redound still more to Adamantine,

justly estimating the high character of this noble son !
of Georgia, selected him to represent tlio interests of
the United States in the kingdom of Sardinia* As a
Charge’ representing Whig policy, and a Whig Admin
istration, Dr. Baber abandoned a most lucrative prac
tice, and took his |w>sition at a foreign Court. No man
can do this without making sacrifices, and no one who
has ever served his country abroad, ma le more than Dr.
Baber. But 6carcc'y had Ins admirable attention to
the interests of the United States, and diplomatic skill,
reached the ears of those Georgians, his old associates
in politics who have ever been so proud of him, when the
traitor, Tyler, with his supreme manuate, recalled him
to his home, to gratify some otic of Ins new associates,
or to make a vote in his then expected caud dacy for
the Presidency. One of the proscribed, one of the pun-

for Congress.
Wings of the Third District, this is Iho m in you are
call- d upon to support! Can there be failure in the
contest] Wo do no;, wo cannot believe it! The vo
ters of your district—the whig voters — “know no such
word as fail' 1 ! Rally then to the polls as you were
wont to do, and your district will be represented by as
high a toned, as holiest, and as estimable a man, as ev
er entered the lulls ol Congress. But he on the alert !
Let no man calculate upo^i the certainty of his election,
because the di-trict lias a Whig majority! Absence,
sickness, and other causes, frequently weaken the
strong, and make the minority successful. You have
a wily enemy to contend against—an enemy led on by
one who knows how to manage, and who will spare no
exertion to succeed! Like one man, then, stand up to
your candidate, and for the second time let us record the
joyful tidings, that tho Whigs of the Third Congress
ional District will permit no self-styled democrat to
represent them in the National Councils.
