For the Season
of Iudia, sweeping away
ants in appalling numbers.
The bloody scourge of war, which was
upon our land in 1861. occupied our
whole attention ; and while our people
read with horror the tales of bloodshed
on the hotly contested battle-fields of our
country, the malignant pestilence was
making rapid strides through Asia, where
it fed and fattened upon the half civilized
and thickly populated cities. It is but
a few months since the scourge was
chronicled as thousands of leagues from
London, while to-day we wake from our
dream of fancied security and find the
hideous monster threatening our very
doors.
The frightful mortality which occurred
in Egypt early last Spring created no lit
tle consternation and excitement among
the savans of Europe. The contagion
spread from city to city, engulphiug
whole communities, the city of Cairo
alone losing nearly six thousand inhabi
tants within the short space of thirty
days, while the affrighted populace of
Alexandria fied from their homes
2>anic stricken, and those who were un
able to flee were consumed in the vor
tex of death. Passing rapidly from Al
exandria, we next learned of the insidi
ous approaches of the fell monster at Con
stantinople, Damietta, Smyrna, Sicily,
Marseilles, and latterly in London and
Liverpool.
We would not be considered alarmists,
but it is well for all to look at this grim
monster, its proportions, strength and
peril. We write, not to add to the fears
of the timorous, but simply to trace
briefly the rise and progress of the terrible
disorder, and to awaken our authorities
and the people generally, to the vital im
portance of adopting the most stringent
precautionary measures to prevent, if
possible, its importation to our shores, as
in the case of the steamship Atlanta at
New York. In all foreign ports no sani
tary regulations, however strictly en
forced, have been sufficient to retard the
inarch of the dreadful messenger. The
most eminent physicians of Europe con
tend that experience proves that prior to
the advent of Cholera, other contagious
diseases of that nature, such as dysentery
and diarrhoea, must prevail, and that the
history of epidemics proves that the ani-
wa lkingdom also become inoculated
with distempers. If this latter as
sertion be true, and there appears
to be no plausible grounds for doubt,
ing the statement, the Cattle Plague,
which has ravaged England to such
an extent that a special form of
prayer has been adopted in the Episcopal
Church invoking Divine interposition to
arrest its progress, has a fearful signifi
cance. The diseases among the brute
creation have not been confined exclusive
ly to England, for, in many parts of our
country, especially in Virginia, we hear
gloomy reports of the decimation of cat
tle l»y some mysterious disorder unknown
to our veterinary surgeons. Some of the
English journals consider the spread of the
murrain among the herds of cattle, and
the appearance of the Cholera immedi
ately after, as ominous of the arrival of a
savage pestilence, that is to sweep with
unrelenting fury over the continent.
The sudden landing of so contagious a
disease on our shore at so inauspicious a
period, while the pestilential odors of
war, are still ascending, is no simple mat
ter. With the peril at our own doors
it would seem that wisdom would dictate
that every community leave undone noth
ing which can in the slightest degree
tend to avert the inevitable horrors of
Cholera- Our city is in a very cleanly
condition, but there is ample room
for improvement. We have defective
drains, hundreds of privies that are in a
dangerous condition, while occasionally
piles of garbage, decaying vegetable mat
