The ItiO.h regiment New York Volunteers,
,icut. Col. IE F- Underhill. Commanding, left
is city on Saturday last on the steamship
evada, for New York, tbeir term of service hav-
g expired.
Tbisrcgiment was recruitel in Wayne, A’-
jhany, Wyoming, Erie, Seneca and Cayuga
ainties, and waa organized in the fill of 1862,
Auburn, N. Y, by Col. Cbas. C. Dwight,
icy sail >d in the B inka’ expedition from New
Wk Dec. 6th, 1S62, and arrived at New Orleans
pec. 29:b. On Janaary 8, 1863, they were ns-
ijned to the brigade of Gea. Weitzel, and on tbo
[!tb of the same month, participated in the bat-
of the Colton ; was subsequently engaged in
i battle of Bisland, and in the desperate and
ody charges on the enemy’s w rks at Port
son on May 27 and June 14. After the sur-
der of Fort Hudson, the regiment was assigned
the 1st Divisioo, 19;h Army Carps, and served
th it in the fall of 1863. in the second “Teche”
impaign. In the spring of 1864, they were ec»
red ia the Red River expedition, behaving
ith its wonted gallantry at Sibine C-oss Roads
d Pleasant Hill. In July, 1864, the 19th
rps was transferred to Virginia and served
der Uen. Sheridan in his brilliat Valley cam-
ign.
At the battles of Winchester and Cedar
eek, the 160:h was conspicuous for steadiness
d bravery, and losth eavily. In April, 1865,
sy were sent to Washington, and were pres-
it at the grand review. In May they were or-
tred to Savanuah. Subsequently they were sent
IlawkiDsrille, Georgia, where the welcome
[tier to “Prepare for muster out” reach them.
No regiment has a better record either for
thavior under fire, or lor the orderly conduct
individual members in camp or on the
tch.
Col. Underbill, their popular and efficient
itumander, was twice wounded at the battle
Cedar Creek, Virginia, but refused to go to

Editor Savannah National Republican :
Last Friday morning while partaking of an
excellent lunch at one of our first class sa
loons, we noticed two lately arrived “knocks”
fingering rather nervously around their neigh
bors’ pockets; again on Saturday morning,
they entered the same saloon by a rear en
trance, indulged in a plate of Turtle soup and
a few crackeis, and made their exit by the
front door, separating at the first corner, one
travelling towards the “Exchange,” the other
up Bull street. Perhaps a personal descrip
tion of these pickpockets may be of in'erest to
your readers, and tend to put lunch-eaters on
their guard. No. 1 is about five feet ten
inches in height, has lightbair, with moustache
and goatee, and wears a black suit, and black
beaver bat with crape on it. No. 2 is about
five feet nine inches high, has light curly hair
and moustache, wears black clothes and small
black felt hat. We would like to ask why
they favored us with a visit ? Does not the
crowd at the Broadway Theatres pay ? or have
they had a falling out with the Houston street
“guns?” Emigrate, immigrate or migrate,
gentlemen, for you will find Savannah a less
profitable field than New York.
Query ?—Is it customary for the agents of
New York agricultural firms to travel on
steerage ticket, and to suddenly change their
wearing apparel (throwiug the rejected suit
overboard) upon entering the Savannah river
We only ask for information.
We are happy to chronicle the departure
(per steamer North Point for Baltimore, last
Saturday morning,) of Mons. Russell, the gen -
teel gambler, although we regret that the watch
which he took with him was not returned to its
rightful owner. We hope this may warn “ver-
dants” to shun the company of affable stran
gers in future.
Wonder if the two “cracksmen” who arrived
daring the past three days intend to commence
operations soon ? No. 1 is about five feet six
inches in height, has sandy hair and moustache,
and wears a very stylish black knit, including
hat. No. 2 is about five feet five-in height, has
red curly hair, moustache and goatee, and wears
dark suit; English sporting coat; his head
quarters are not far from the market.
We hear but little of {the “mysterious and
confidential young man” recently. Perhaps
he has resolved to test the old adage, “Hones
ty is the best policy.” We trust such is the fact.
Wo are greatly concerned about those threats
which certain parties recently threw out in re
ference to us, and hardly dare venture out late
at night. “/n mg mind's eye, Horatio" I
“Dodger.”

GiKTuatSH—Though the destruction of the Ameri
can Museum has proved a serious loss to myself and
tbe public, 1 am happy to verify the old adage, that,
“Ills an Ql wind that blows nobody good," and conse
quently, congratulate you that your well-known sales
have again demonstrated their superior fire-proof
qualities In an ordeal of on usual severity.
The safe you made for me some time ago was in the
office of the Museum, on ttji second floor, back part of
the building, and in the hottest of the Are.
After twenty-tour hours of trial it was found among
the debris, and on opening it this day has yielded up
its contents in very good order-books, papers, poll-
des of insurance, bank bills, all in conditiuu, for imme
diate use, and a noble commentary on the trustworthy
ness of Honing's Fire-Proof Safes.
Truly yours,
