POETRY
LINCOLN.
| Joel T. Hart, of Kentucky, the distinguished
sculptor, who bos been so long sojourning in
Italy, recently enclosed in a letter to a friend
in Washington the following noble, patriotic
poem, with reference '« die death of our Into
President :1
A badge within a> J heart I wear
Of stars, with blue, and white, and red,
In honor of the mighty Dead,
And consecrate its symbol there
To him who toil’d and bled.
The patriot sprang, at Lincoln’s call,
To arms; the navies start’d the main:
The slave, exulting, broke his chain :
Religion rose to disenthrall,
And pour’d her holiest strain.
I too awak’d the humble lay
To Lincoln, with his spirit steel’d:—
To Valor, on the battle-field :—
To Freedom, in her darkest day,
While chiefs and armies reel’d.
Like tall oak stood his towering form,
Thro’ war’s deep thunder, long and load :
From triumph stoop’d to raise the bow’d,
As the warm sun bends o’er the storm,
The rainbow on the cloud.
Now that his mighty work is done,
I can but lisp his glorious name
That sets the nation’s heart on flame,
The Martyr’d, and the first but one
Of Freedom and of Fame!
From Barbari-m’s cup abrim,
The dastard fiends, to pall the night,
As Freedom struck, and Truth, and Right;
And dash'd Shame’s blackest curse at Llitn
Who said, ,l Lct there he light!’’
Return’d to God, from deeds sublime
Fur Man, that shall the ages throng,
Which to the universe belong:
His monrners are the train of Time,
His dirge, Eternal Sung!
J. T. Habt.
Florence, Italy, August 27, 1865.
THE STOKY OF A DAY.
A soldier slept, as the morning uprolled
O’er the white tents pitched on the pleasant
plain;
The bayonet’s gleam was the gleam of gold,
And the fields of yellow grain.
Then the soldierjirn^7i, en his rest was done,
merrily sang in bis joyous glee;
He Sharpened bis sword and he brightened liis
gun,
And he smiled as as he thought of the laurels
won,
That yet on his brow would be.
The couriers rode when the moontidc came,
Ana told of grim lines advancing fast;
So the camp was filled with a wild acclaim.
And the soldier’s heart was kindled with flame,
As the hurried squadrons passed.
But the glen full soon was the place of blood.
With the hissing of shot and the clang of
steel;
And men lay dabbled and stained in the wood,
Tho’ the soldier’s comrades in vaior stood,
Till they made the loemen reel.
When night came down the corses were strewn,
And the soft dew fell on the face of the dead;
But the soldier’s'song had changed to a moan,
As faint and pale where the sad moon shone,
He lay with his bleeding head.
’Tis morning again on the tents and the spears,
But the goldier’s voice is forever still;
There’s a form that’s missed from the cavaliers,
There’s a sweet face blurred with bitter tears—
There’s a nameless grave on the hill.
EDITOR WANTED.
BY J. X>. STEELE.
We have been without a paper
In our town a year or more ;
Though we’ve had of printers plenty,
And of editors a score.
Some of them were ‘jam up” fellows,
Good at writing, good to plan;
But they all without exception
Failed in pleasing every man !
For this mighty sin we "shipped” them;
Now, we’re sending forth a call
For an editor to join us
Who will write to please us all ;
Others need not ask for favor,
For of such we've had our fill:
We will heed no applications
Save from those who fill the bill.
Well I mind the first amoDg us—
He was by no means the worst—
But we didn’t seem to like him,
Simply ’cause he was the first ;
For, you know, it is the custom,
Just to sacrifice a few,
So we placed our heels upon him,
Ere we know what heeould do.
Next there came a gifted fellow,
With a prepossessing way,
Who, but for a fatal blunder,
Would have doubtless won the day:
Blank, a crafty village merchant,
Bought a "puff” to gain a “lift,”
’Twas offensive—other merchants
Sent the editor adrift.
Next we pent a learned committee
To a man in Baltimore,
Whom we knew to be a writer,
Full of cunning, full of lore;
They solicited, he yielded,
Came, delighted young and old,
But he got in debt, and toddled,
Leaving ns ‘‘the bag to hold.”
Then a host of others followed,
Lived a while and passed away,
Leaving this, our thriving village,
Minus of a press to-day,
lienee, we sent this little notice,
Knowing that some fellow Can
Make a fortune here among us.

Anecdote of Nfernrireer.
At a general rehearsal of “Robert,” on see
ing the admirable scene of the third act, in the
cloister of Saintc Rosalie—the decoration, the
idea, and the execution of which, by the way,
are duo to M. Duponchel—poor Meyerbeer
quivered with paiu, “My dear Director,"
tsuid he to M. Veron, “I see clearly that you
do not count oa my opera, but run after the
success of stage effect.” “Wait till the
fourth act,” answered tho Director. The
fourth act arrived—the curtain rose—Meyer
beer perceived Isabelle in a small chamber,
which one would have said was borrowed from
the Theatre Gymnase. He had dreamt of vast
aDd splendid apartments for the Princess of
Sicily—something dazzling. "Decidedly,” he
cried, bitterly, "you do not believe in my
Bcore. You have not dared to go to the ex
pense of a scene.”
