Educational Bureau or School Insti
tute for the SoutH.
By reference to an advertisement in another
column, it will be perceived that Major Gener
al Henry C. Wayne, who, during the war, was
Adjutant and Inspector General of Georgia,
and formerly of the U. S. Army, a son of
Judge Wayne, and a native of Georgia, has
been appointed a Director for this Bureau in
the South.
The object of the Bureau, as will be perceived
by the advertisement, is to furnish teachers to
those in need of them, and to find places for
tutors in want of situations. The Headquar
ters of the Bureau will be located at Savannah,
where orders will be received for all the States
east of the Mississippi.
The Secretary - , to whom communications
should be addressed, is Major John O. Ferrill,
a native of Savannah, Ga., has seen active
service in the Confederate Army, and now that
the din of war is closed, lie is willing to combat
that arch enemy of mankind—ignorance.
The appointment of General Wayne and Ma
jor Ferrill, both well-known citizens of this
State, is a guarantee that the affairs of the Bu
reau have been placed injudicious hands, and
if iUdef^jgability will crown the Bureau with
successs we are sure success awaits it under the
tutelage and direction of two such competent
and faithful gentlemen. Both General Wayne
and Major Ferrill enter the arena with an ear
nestness and buoyancy that leads us to predict
the most glorious results for their labors.
Personal.
We were favored with a very pleasant
call last evening from Captain John J.
Mellon, Esq., of New Orleans. Captain
Mellon is well known throughout Louisi
ana and Texas, and in nearly all the
Southern States, as a partner in the firm
of Marsden & Co., of the Crescent City,
one of the most enterprising and exten
sive drug dealers in the South. Captain
Mellon, who was formerly an officer on
General Beauregard’s staff', is as shrewd
and energetic a business man as he was
gallant in the field. A more courteous
gentleman we have not met in many
years, and we wish the Captain abundant
success in his business tour throughout
our State.
Direct Trade.
We are gratified to notice the resump'ion of
the direct trade between this port and Europe.
Several vessels oleared during the past week for
Liverpool, and several are now loading for the
same place. We have also had two arrivals from
Liverpool within the past two days, and several
vessels are now on the way to this port. Our
wharves will soon present the cheering eight,
often witnessed before the war, when the opposite
shore could scarcely be seen for the many masts
obstructing the view. Savannah has fairly en
tered the lists, and her watchword must be on
ward ! onward !
