BT MIKA ADDISIKE.
Like the tempest’s dark cloud,
O’er veiling the sky,
Like the thunder that peals
Its anthems on high, '
Like the liglftuing that gleam*
And strikes unto death,
Thus,' thus is the power
Of calumny’s breath.
Like Afric’s sirocco
That sweeps o’er the plain,
Like Boreas’ wild howling
O’er frozen North main,
Lilts tiger that croucheth
In dingle so drear,
Darkly watching its prey,
Thus, thus thou art near.
Like arrow that glances
From Indian’s foul hand,
Whose point hath been dipped
In death’s venom land,
Like the poison sinks deep
In festering sore,
Thus blistering thy tongue
And words ever more.
Like the snake that coils round
’Ae branches on high,
And watches while hanging
Its prey passing by.
Like fabled sea serpent
Tljat covers with slime,
Thus loathsome are the deeds
Of thy burning clime.
Like the beautiful bride
Death strikes with bis dart,
Like the widow that wails
With an anguish’d heart,
Like the Orphan that feels
The world dark and drear,
Thus cometh thy shadow
O’er hearts every where.
Like the spot on the disc
Of the brilliant sun.
Or like terror’s wild grasp
That senses benumb,
Our bright hope doth vanish
As helpless we hie ;
Crushed by thy dark spell^
We ask but to die.
Like the spirit of evil
Tbou lovest the might,
Like the eve’s booting owl
Thou ghunne8t the light;
For tby deeds are too dark,
Too sinful and wild,
For the least sunny ray
From Truth’s fairy child.
Say, like what art thou not,
That’s evil and drear ?
Thou crushest the young heart
With wildest despair,
And wreakest thy vengeance
On noblest and best,
And the heart but in death
From thee findeth rest.
Aye* there thou’rt vanquished !
Death stilleth thy tongue;
In the bright world above
Thy name is unsung.
From Hell’s dreary portals
Thou ownest thy birth,
A demon unchained,
Thou roamest o’er earth.
t'lMNUIAL AND COMMERCIAL.
Cincinnati markets.
Cikcikkati, Not. 17.
There has been but little doing in provisions
daring the week past and prices nave been quite
regular. Buyers and sellers have been Dearer
together in their views. The trade has been
small and bnyerB buy cautiously, taking only
enough to supply immediate wants, while sellers
sell freely as fast as their stuff is ready. There
seems to be no disposition whatever to hold on
to the product of the hog, bought at present
figures.
Logs—Are now the all absorbing topic. On
the spot they sel freely at full prices, where par
ties have the product sold in advance, but for
future, buyers are timid. My advices from the
West and North West indicate a fair hog crop,
but we may look for a late and long continued
season. The receipts here up to this date have
been greater in the aggregate than last year,
but this may be accounted for from the fact, that
lust year the Government took possession of
nearly ail the Kentucky Hogs, and that about
6 000 had been received here up to this date, while
this year over 35,000 have been received from
Kentucky alone. In the mean time the receipts
from Onto and Indiana have been much lighter
than last year. Owing to tbe low price of com
in the interior, feeders think it will pay better to
feed late, .even though they get a less price for
the anin al then than now I quote gross hogs
at $11 to 11 75 for ordinary to very choice, or
$13 50 to 14, nett.
Mass Pokk—New is offered freely at 32 and old
at 81 50. Prime mess is nominally worth $28,
without sales.
Romps—18 to 20; but few in market.
Bulk Meats—Old in light supply and demand
aDd told at 15 and 17, loose; new bulk meats, 15
days in sail, 1§3* and 17}* packed, for shoulders
and sides.
Gbeen Meats—12,16,173*to 18c; for shoulders,
sides, and Hams; sweet pickled hama, iu tea or
bhds, 20c.
Bacon—Stock light. Shonlders and clear sideR
sell at 163* and l/ ^ c pecked. A few new hams
sell at 3oc, bat the supply is light.
Lakd—Has further declined, with sales to-day
at 2$ to 263* f° r prime kettled; steam, 26c; whole
hog 25c; bead or gut, 24}*; kegs, prime, 283*c.
Whisky—Quiet at $2,28 for new.
Freights —Unchanged, though I can occasion
ally make a better rate than those published.
Jipobts—For the week are 1764 tierces lard,
146o kegs, 695 bhds, 1 96 tierces, bulk and ba
con; 20yo bbls pork.
