Wo call the special attention of the patri
otic Women of Georgia to the eloquent ap-
pta
Qr a nTEOMASTER-GENBRAL Foster on the
subject of supplying our brave men in the
army with Socks and other articles to pro
tect i Ucm from the “ winter’s cold.’ ’ Read it,

you have hitherto done, and many a poor

We call particular attention to Order
" So. 10, issued by Major General Cobb to the
Scale tronpa. We trust that the Ganeral’a
appeal will not pass unheeded, anff that the
troops will willingly waive their territorial
,, boundaries and go to any portion of the
Slate they may be ordered.

Oi it Citf.—The weather has been getting
materially colder for the past week, and ne
cessitated the use of fires, although daring
the day a bright sun makes it very pleas
aut. We trust that every exertion will be
_ made to procuro a proper supply of fuel lor
the mo of tho needy in town. Unless they
are taken care of by the benevolent of onr
city, tho coming winter will be one of great
uafferings and privatious to thorn. Lot the
wealthy class of our citizens see that they
want for nothing.
The election for Governor passed off very
quietly, in spite of tho trial of one desperate
Furlow man to make a fuss at the polls, but
which did not go, as the Brown crowd was
too large for him. Ererylhiag indicates that
< l )V. Brown is re-elected for the fourth term,
and by his re election proved most conclu
sively that, in spite of all said, the people
and army are satisfied with his admini3tra-
t'on.
Tho pleasant weather last woek brought
<».U the ladies in rather strong force ou the
streets, and several pretty forms and faces
were seen prcambulaliag The crowds on
■mrsiryots continue as much us ever, ovi-
df-Tit ■ giving the guard who has to examine
( is*o3a great deal of trouble that he wonld
-rivoid if he could.
l: i'lvsideni, arrived hero on Thursday
night and started tor the army of Tennessee
on Friday morning. There are various ru-
moit, of the object which has brought him to
this section of tho Confederacy, bufno one
o:.u arrive at any truthful conclusion. The
‘ n U probable report, however, is, that he
has gone to investigate the causes of disa-
greemeut between Bragg and Polk, and to
■ arrange Ibo difficulty in an amicable uian-
i ner. .
Mrs Crisp’s Company is alill amusiug the
j t play-going public at the Alheneum, with a
1 decided improvement to what was presented
during the past two weeks. The recovery of
Mrs, Clarke and arrival of Mr. Davis has at-
tracied many to-the Theatre who would oth
erwise keep away. Altogether, we must say
that the performances of last week show a
rcat advaucc, but thore is still room for im
provement ia tho actors, the majority of
whom are wofully ’deficient both in acting
and studying, as was made, apparent the
other night by one of them arresting another
ou the stage lor a forgory committed “four
years hence/'* Mrs. Clark, among the ac
lases, is the soul of the whole Company.—
Sue in pretty, which is of itself a great at-
‘ |tttion among theatre-going young’ ment
xW<l besides which, sing9 a very good song,
rid ea ts light comedy admirable.
Easiness in town is about the same as the
.week before. We have heard no advance
i prices, but at the samYtidao no decrease

aIuk Drama.-—It must be acknowledged
* that the temple of the “ Bard of Devon ” in
fi io Cmfoaeracy is at a very low standard,
•although the drama is still greeted with full
Ih.i-ucs. There are in fact no actors in the
iSmih that we can dec;u worthy of the
•miUR 1 , tad with very few exceptions, those
•who are now treading tho stago are mere
tyrJS in tlus business—young men who aro
itage struck, aud “taken in baud ’’ by some
enterprising manager.
In every portion of the Confederacy we
hear of theatres being open, but cannot yet
hear of auv piece performs 1 where all the
characters aro well personated. The Rich-
nond theatre can boast ot but 'one recom-
neudatiou, and that is the beauty of its in.
ierior, and tho excellence of its scenery. All
ic actors there,'arc very poor. Ia Macon,
iicrb is another company, tho only party
along whom, who can act passably, being
tlss Bloisc Bridges. Ia Mobile, we believe
the company has got some redeeming quali-
hfs. Mr. Crisp is a very good actor, and so
L Mr. Anderson, but then all their good act-
i 1 :^ spoiled from the fact that there aro
a i good actresses to play female characters
pfopcrly. .
The drama is on its decline in the South,
aud, unless the war ends Jbefore, in another
u u will have entirely disappeared. The
▼od old days when we used to sit in a thea
tre,"uad feel interested in the piece, are van-
iihod, ;iud we visit a theatre now morn for
tie purpose of passing away a t®w idle
lours, than to see life represented in all that
. ht^lrsic truthfulness of delineation that the
oama is intended to portray.

Missionary Ridge, Oct. 9th, via Chicam^u-

late 3’esterdey afternoon on Lookout from
his mortar battery on Moccasin Point, fjr
tho purpoao of ascertaining whether our
mort&r batteries have been removed. Alter
firing for an bour and failing to elicit a re

A twenty pound Parrott ia the Star Fori
also threw a few shells in the direction of
our siege guns for a familiar purpose, but also
failed.
The MoecasJn Point Battery opened again
this morning at eleven o’clock, firing very
slowly at our pioneers on Leokout.
The weather is clear and pleasant.
From Charleston.
Charleston, Oct. 10.—The enemy’s bat
teries on Gadsberry Hill, were shelling Fort
Johnston steadily .yesterday. . Our batteries
were firing at Gregg and Wagner. The eu
omy has mounted a heavy Parrott gun at
Cummings Point.
Yury little firing last night or this morn
ing.
Yesterday a graud review of all tho in

very fine one.

is no news of importance. The Era says
that tha rebels are evacuating Richmond
and that the whole of Virginia will be
abandoned. 'Goldin New Orleans wps fifty

The Era thinks the defeat of Rosecrans
not halt so bad as reported.
SECOND DISPATCH.
Mobile, Oct, 9.—A late arrival from
Shreveport states that Price was frilling back
towards Shreveport and Taylor falling back
from Alexandria,- with Banks pursuing.
Banks crossed from Now Orleans in three
columns, one at Lake Charles, another at
Brashear City, and a third at lhe;’rao«tb of
Red River. His entire force is estimated at
35,000, and Steele and Blunt at 30,000. The
gunboat Rattler had been destroyed, and.all
boats up to Bt. Joseph, except one belonging
to negroes.
All gunboats ami transports are constantly
fired on by our pickets.
Every thing is quiet in Texas.
Thirty-five thousand French troops are
reported at Matamoras.
The report i» everywhere credited.
Gen. Forrest is hereunder leave to recruit
his health, aud not under arrest. He has
teudered his resignation, and if it is accepted
will raiso an independent force.
The weather is delightful.
The Register has a late Memphis Bulle
tin. It coutains a New Orleans letter. The
Sabine expedition is a much grander affair j
than reported. Troops have been sent to
Brashear City to engage the Confederate
flotilla and to land 25,000*men at the pass.
All other movements in that direction
have been stopped.
The Texas expedition is certainly aban
doned for the present.
Complaints are made that the opening of
the Mississippi has not benefitted Now Or
leans. Provisions ar e higher than ever.
The Yankees will not send troops to
Brownsville, Texas, as they are afraid of
complications with France.
