Her step is ns light at the. breezes that kiss
'Pin* flowers optin' hills, without shaking;
And thetonesofhur voire, fraught wills softness andbliss
The heart's finest feelings mtuken.
Her forehead of snow, fringed with light silken Imir,
Seems Purity's Temple, ailuring
The mind's an.’eUhiams from the regions of care,
And promising rapture enduring.
llcr mild hcathing eye of the hue of the sky,
The heiirPnf the gazer subduing,
By raising the soul freer gross habit’s controul,
Keeps many a spirit iiom ruin.
The rudest of men, unless nature they crush,
Tint happen to »ee her, must love her:
For her fugitive thoughts in no case with ablush
The ciieck of a seraph would cover.
No tapestried lmtl lit her infantile hours.
Nor are wealth's glittering baubles around her;
But green s pringing corn, and the wild forest Cow ers,
And a tew rustic kinsfolk, surround tier.
Yet sweeter and fairer and purer than she
Never felt life’s red current in motion;
And melted the ice-drops of sorrow must ho
in the heart JO her yielding devotion.
NOBODY.
The following is a pleasant jeu ifesprit, from a late
English paper. It is meant to satirize the absurd doc
trine of I nglish law, that "the greater the truth the I
greater tile libel.”
A CASE OF libel.
A certain old Sprite, who dwells below,
(’Twerp a libel, perhaps to mention where,)
Came up incog. some wii-.t< rsago.
To try. for a change, the London air.
So w ell he lo iked, and dress'd ami talk'd,
And hid histail and horns so handy,
You’d hardly have known him, os he walk’d,
From ilnikns, or any other Dandy.
(N. IV—His horns, they say, unscrew;
So lie has but to take them out of the socket,
And. just as some tine husbands do—
Conveniently clap them into his pocket.)
In short, he look’d extremely natly,
And ev’n contrived, to ids own great wonder,
By dint of sundry scants from Gutti.*
To keep the sulphurous /logo under.
And so my gentleman hoof’d about,
Unknown to nil but a chosen few
At Wliite’st and Crockford’st where no doubt,
lie had many posl-obits falling due.
Alike a gamester and a wit, -
At night he was seen with Croekford’s crew;
At morn wuh learned dames wnuM sit—
* tro passed his time ’tw ist black and blue.
Some wished to make him nn M. P.
Hut, finding Wilkest was also one, he
Vi .is heard to say, "he'd lie d——d, if lie
"Would ever sit in one house witlf Jonny.”
At length, ns secrets travel fast,
And devils, whether he or she,
Are sure to be found out at Inst,
The affair got wind most rapidly.
The Press,the impartial Press, that snubs
Alike a fiend’s or an angel's .capers—
Jibs Pnton’s soon ns Belzebub’s—
Fired off a squib in the morning papers.
“\V e warn good men to keep aloof
“From a grim oid Dandy, sen! about, »
‘‘With a li.» -pi-oof w ig ami a cloven Imof,
"Through uncut cut Hoby|| smoking out.”
Now. the Devil be.ingn gentleman.
Who piques him-fit on his well bred dealings,
zTou may guess, w lieu o’er these lines he ran,
IIow much they hurt and shocked his feelings.
A" «y he posts to a Man of Law,
And oh, ’twouid have done you good to’vcsecn ’em,
As paw shook hand, and hand shook paw,
And ’twas hail good fellow well met, between’em
Straight nn indictmcnt.was preferred—
And much the Devil enjoyed the jest,
When, looking among the judges, he heard
That of all the butch, his own was the beat.
