rejected it very roughly. What- a contrast is ex

has been twice disobeyed and yet wo shall not
hear of assaults upon members or riotous pro

FIRE—It falls to our lot to record tho most
destructive firo that has ever occurred in this
place. Tho alarm was given about eleven o'
clock last uight. The fire commenced iu tho up
per part of. a two stury building, on tho west side
of mulborry street, owned by i’lillauder Jiidsou,
nod had made very little progress, when discover
ed, but for want of efficient menus, it was found
impossible to cuntroul it. Tho only remedy was
to save as much property as possible and ceufine
tho ficj'to the square whcro'it originated. It soon
consum’d every building on that square, on mul
berry street, aud a dwelling houjif- on fourth
street, where another Was pulled down, which
prevented further progress in that direction. In
the other, tho tiro was stopped at the corner of
thirj street, (a considerable space intervening be-
t’.veja t'ls l-uibliiigs ) TI10 buildings to tbo nlloy,
which lUviclj, tbu square iu tho middle from third
to fourth street, except the. office of Tracy fit
butler, were either consumed or pullod dqwn.
Great iuJu.try was necessary to prevent the fir*
from croidng mulberry street, which was offocted-
by the activa hxortiuiis of a few of our citizens,
whom we are happy to state, did their duty. It
