SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, JANUARY 9. 186ft.
The Savannah Daily Herald
A Western paper says that the masses in
Brigham 1 ouug's dominions have only one
wife, and the average does not exceed two
or three apiece. Brigham Young is the re
i two hundred and forty-two
children, of whom thirty-two are dead. The
surviving balance, two hundred and thirteen,
consists of eighity-flve boys and one hundred
and twenty-eight, girls. Silft6 Reeder Is
thrice and Jeremiah Stern nine times Brig
ham's brother-in-law, these worthies having
respectively married threo and nine sisters
of their child’s wives. The preponderating
imli'iualily among the mule inhabitants is
that of Sweden, and the Danes eome next.
The Scotch, noted for their metaphysical
propensities, surviving all the whisky of the
land ol Burns, outnumbering the Norwe
gians. Next to them are the Swiss, Ger
mans and Americans. As for the French,
there are only two in all the vast Mormon
domains, and there are not more than three
Italians, and only ope Spaniard, an isolated
representative ol Don Quixote, iu Salt Lake.
As tar as the female population is concerned,
it is note-worthy that there is not a single
French woman, while there are eight Ital
ians and two. Spanish women, and even one
representative of classic Greece. A French
lady would be looked upon as the most pre
cious of acquisitions, and other Latin females
arc also in great demand, in proportion to
tneir greater scarcity. The majority of the
women came iiom the United States, Scan
dinavia, Switzerland, Germany and Mexico.
The Western papers tell in good faith an
incredible ghost story, and back it up by the
sworn affidavits of several respectable per
sons at Grand Traverse, Mich. A spiritual
inediumess ai that place, whose husband was
a stubborn disbeliever in the “manifesta
tions," assured him in her dying bre&lh that
she should reappear to him in her body at
his death, to convince him ol the truth pt her
belief. Several weeks alter he was taken
sick and a “spiritual" rumpus wps kept up
iu the house until his decease, which soon
followed. -Just.before his death, which oc
curred at; midnight, heavy and irregular foot
steps were heard in the hall, the door was
burst open, and the alenchful remains of a
human body, reeking with putresence,“talked,
into the room, and in a muffled voice reminded
i he dying .nan of the promise, and, as he.
died, fell a horrid .mass upon the floor. An
examination of her grave proved it to be
empty. The story created intese exeitement,
and the house where the affair was said to
have occurred was burned by the friends of'
the family. •
An indecent play,.turning apon Parisian
amours, was lately produced at the Theatre
Francaia,. Parts. The audience was very
brilliant,, but the piece was zoo strongly fla
vored for even Parisian taste, and was re
ceived with storms of hisses. It is called
“Henrietta Marechal,” and is written by the
brothers De Gourcourt.
