other opisto preparations of this c lass hitherto
made, ntttl .to which are justly attributed thoro
disagreeable effect* upon the stout tch and nervous
system, which so frequently follow their opera
tion. and limit their usefulness.
This Elixir may be ndonted in all those cases i t
which either Opium or its preparations arc ad-
ministered, with tho certainty of olitnining^nll
their sed ative, anodyne and anti-spasmodic ef
fects, without any bf these disagreeable conse
quences, of headache, nausea, vomiting, consti
pation. tremors, nud a train of other unhappy
symptoms, which ore often ns distressing a* those
which it wiis applied to remove.
The Elixir of < Jnimii is not only superior to the
artifici al compounds of Morphine^ in its being
more mild, permanent and uniform iu its effects,
but the preparation possesses also a superior ad
vantage to their solutions, itt not boinp liable to
decompntition or deterioration from variable tem
perature or long keeping: a serious objection to
which the latter arc exposed.
Finally, Morphine, not being tho full represen
tative of- Opium, cannot alone, aud that in artifi
cial combination too, produce nil the characteristic
effect* cf so triumnhant a remedy, when so many
of it* other valuable principle* as Codein, Nar-
rein and Moconlo Achl are oxelmled.

From Dr. Chilton, the eminent Chemist of New-

concerning it, 1 therefore say, that the process is
in accordance with well known Chemical laws,

the anodyne and sedative power* of the ordinary
