Sale of Steamboats.—On Thursday last the boats
ofthe Mbit land and Virginia Steamboat Com
pany were brought to the hammer nt Baltimore.
They were put up in the following order, and
sold at the prices affixed, viz: Alabama, not sold;
Jewess, $15,250, to Baltimore Steam Packet
Company; Columbus, $8108, to James George;
Pocahontas. 6000, to Lewi. G. Taylor; Patrick
Henry, $6000, for |ds. to W. I. Chapman of
Norfolk; South Carolina, $15,000, to C.C. Ja
mison. The Baltimore Steam Packet Compa-
nyhsve purchased the wharf heretofore occupi-
ed by the Maryland and Virginia Steamboat
Company, and will continue the daily line South
in connexion with the Portsmouth and Ronnoke
Rail Road Company. The boats employed are
the Georgia, South Carolina, and Jewess—a
fonrth boat, we understand, will bo purchased at
once, to be used as a spare boat in case of acci
dent.
Americas Newspapers.*—VVe hove before us
a list of newspapers published in this country,
their titles, places ofpuplication and object The
list comprise upwards of 2000 papers, and was
collected by Mons. Vattemare, who has in
iii possession a specimen of each paper, which
lie intends depositing in the National Museum at
Paris. The list is, of course, incomplete, and we
would suggest to the gentlemen of the press all
over the country, the propriety of furthering his
object by giving him such information as he
may require. From the list before us it appears
that there are 31 papers published in Boston, 61
in New York, 36 in Philadelphia, 20 in Bulti-
more, 16 iu New Orleans, 14 in C incinnnti, 8 in
8t Louis, 5in Louisville, 6 in Charleston aud 6
lu Washington.'
Moits. V. remarks that when this list of papers
Is exhibited in France,it will canso much surprise,
aud that the estimate will show that the ephemer-
al press of ihe United Stales exceeds that of all
Europe.—Salt. Clipper.
Orthographical Decoction.— 1 The “Laird
cf Logan” relates a pleasant story illustrating the
miseries of priuters. An old and respectable prin
ter in Glasgow, was sadly bothered with an ap
prentice who could or would not he initiated into
that portion of grammar which treats ofthe pro
per disposition of letter* in words. One day ho
presented such a shockingly inaccurate proof, as
made bis master, after staring with amazement,
take the spectacles from his noso, and give the ill
disposing “imp” the following Tecipe:—“My
man! just gang home this night and tell your
mither to boil Fulton and Knight's Dictionary in
milk, and take it for your supper, as that seems
the only way you’ll ever get spelling put into ye.”

JLandrctli’s Garden Needs,
WARRANTED-Crop 1840.
T HE Proprietor’s opportunities for extensive
prncticul observation have enablod him judi
ciously to discriminate such varieties of vegeta
bles as are renlly worthy of culture, from the infe
rior, or, ns is not unfrequent, worthless varieties
of the tame class, which have been perpetuated
through inexperence; therefore, in making this
selection, he has excluded many sorts usually
found in the Catalogues of those who are mere
venders not practical growers of seeds.—And he is
not sure that the variety might not bo still further
reduced with advutiiago; at any rale this is ample
for any garden, however extensive, and fully
adapted .to the nicest taste.
As to quulity ofthe seeds, the proprietor wishes
it to bo remembered, that what is sold by him is
of his own growth. (With but slight exception,)
therefore warranted with entire confidence, that they
will, upon trial, prove to be fur superior to most
of foreign importation, or such as ure cusually
collected in the United States.
