Wo take leave to day of a senson of peculiar
interest and import in the annals of commerce.
Closely following nil nminially scanty harvest or
Oil Oiir utaplo., which deranged the entire ma
chinery of trade and flimiico, wo worn favored
with the most bountiful crops over secured to a
people; .o largo indeed, that each month', dovol-
opnicnt only reft previous calculations as to ex
tent of product further in the rear. Most for
tunately for tlio Merchant, our navigation remain
ed closed until eo laic, that prices receded consid
erably under die dawn tgf the actual condition of
yield, before any bulk of material was furnished
for operation*, which thus opened upon compar
atively a safe busis of price, guaranteeing a rela
tive security to traffic which obviated the danger
ous risks of previous seasons. The summary of
the twelve months exhibits the satisfactory result
which might naturally be expected to grow out of
so lavish an abundance, the mere agency and
transport of which, has been written in golden
text upon every page ofits record, from the “Cot
ton hook" oftlie country-store,to the cosily freight-
list of the Atlantic carrier, bringiiur us down, full
of hope and engagement, to tlm advent of a com
mercial new yenr.
Locally, we have large and especial ennse of
sclf-grotulatibii. Our city presents a remarkable
exemption from the ravages of disease so pain
fully traced in the country round;—Instead of
being deserted, Savannah is at this moment a city
of refuge for many families who have fled from
the baleful influence of adjacent epidemic. To
our site, our soil, and admirable civic regulations
we are indebted under Providence for this happy
Immunity from nl.
Our Central rail-road, by the indomitable ener
gy of Its President, and the practical science of
its Engineer, is rapidly extending itself to its ter
minus, and now runs over a clear field of One
Hundred and twenty-two miles, drawing daily
from our city thavnlunble supplies needed by the
Planters. Attendant upon this subject is the sig
nificant fact, that tlio traffic upon the road during
this autumn, when wo have full rivers, consider
ably exceeds in amount that ascertained lastyear
when the ordinnry avenues by water to the inte
rior wera entirely unavailable by drought.
We note with gratification an accession to the
number of our merchnnts, by the location among
us of several gentlemen of worth and respecta
bility from the up-country, strengthening our ties
and social relations with our brethren of the inte
rior, whoso interest is so clearly in common with
our own.
Real estate and rents have undergone a mark
ed improvement; and such has been tho demand
for residences for the coming winter, thnt the
buildings under erection are generaly engaged be
fore completion.
Our Bunks are in strong position in reference
to their metallic resources, and their ability to re
sume nayments in specie.
In fine, every thing promises a healthful and
vigorous induction into thebusiness ofu new Sea-
sen, and a
NEW CROP, the extent of which forms, at
tins seasou, so. wide a field of calculation mid con
jecture. During the early part of the autumn, it
bndo fair for a full and satisfactory yield, and
though the summer rains lmd fallen in too greatan
abundance, no worse result thun a redundant
growth was expected, which we had hoped would,
under late influences, have confirmed ull our an
ticipations, and given us a harvest bordering in
magnitude upon the last. In this wo ore disap
pointed—the subsequent destruction bv caterpil
lar and worm having been very great in this and
tue neighboring Stales: while contemplating this
reverse, however, it is expedient to hear in mind
that we hnve been favored since early in Septem
ber, with the most propitious weatherpossiblefor
maturing the plant, and harvesting its yield, and
that we are, thus fur, exempt ft-am tho boisterous
weather, usually attendant upon our autumnal
equinox, and so generally mischievous in its ef
fects. These are promment advantages, and if
we find added to them an open fall, we shall, wo
think, yet secure enough of our staple to satisfy
all wants, abandoning of course, the expccta tiou
of what may he termed a large crop.
Our receipts of new Uplunds date, to sum up 442
bnles; these have generally sold ut 10 c., though
-race the reception of the late English ndviccs,
the offering lots hang heavily at thut price, the
