COSAM EMIR BARTLET, Editor.
V FREE PRESS has been termed the Pal
[itim of Liberty; and since its first establish
.nt, it has been cherished by tiie People, as
efirmand sledtust champion of their rights.—
xperience, so far from chilling the enthusiasm
jtu which it has been regarded, lias only con
fined it in the affections of the people. It has
sen proved to be a most powerful engine in
‘ e correction of those abuses of authority, and
ose faults in the administration of Government,
ncli the Laws neglect, or cannot reach. In a
;e Government like ours, there are many such.
ie institutions of our country are not based
i adamant, but are founded on opinion. Opin
io which is mutable in itself—is one thing in
is day, or age — may be another, the next. —
r tit then but an enlightened press can give
aiility to our forms oi government, by (les
nm&ting correct and liberal notions in poli-
SSI and by inculcating sound maxims, and vir
ious principles. Our Government professes to
erive its power from the suffrages of the peo
e. The Press is therefore of vital importance
the people; because it is a vehicle through
licii they can make their voice be heard,
impeded, through every department of pow-
The Press may sometimes be faulty—may be
luenced by political combinations, or grow
entious. But these are evils which speedily
rktheir own cure. A licentious Press can
long be patronized by a sober and discrim
liing public ; and one that becomes corrupt,
a i the influence of power, and betrays the
trests of tile people, will be neglected by
i people. And thus seif-interest, the only
. which could have induced an Editor to de
t from his duty, will compel him to reform.
Hie principles of the present Editor of the
jtrx, must necessarily have become known,
a large portion of the community, by his tjr
reditorial labors. His views of men and mea
ts have been explained to the public, by
•jtical comment. And it is thought that his
is course will b ar him out in the assertion,
ia;liis main object has alwavs been, to pub
ihan INDEPENDENT, ; .ONEST, and 1M-
A£: lAI. PAPER, which should serve the in
(■(• of the great body of the people, without
uttering the vanity, cringing for the favor, or
gguising the vices, of any particular class of
ieia. However mistaken iie may have been
tie means made use ot to accomplish this
eat object—yet he can truly say, that lie lias
jei devoted to it, with an honesty of mteu
an and singleness of heart, which has distiaiu
liU considerations of pecuniary advantage, or
tsunal feeling. Where his path of duty has
tn clearly marked out, he believes he has
toored to follow it, regardless of conse
mres. He believes that no selfish feelings,
(view's of individual profit, honor or emoiu
it, have had power to force him from a stand,
tch the interests of the people and the hon
cf his country have called upon him io as
le Where liis duty has been plain, he lias
favored that his conduct should oe reariess
i determined. He has not hesitated to de
uce political profligacy, though c.olhed with
iuriiy; lie has advanced boh by .0 the charge,
I attacked the enemies of economy, of jus
of liberty, and the people, m the strong
lis of their power. This he lias not done to
ufy any angry feelings of iiis own, but oe
ise he deemed the public good demanded it.
a particular, it will be the wish of tile Edi
th) keep the Museum aloof from ail party
ingiements. In his editorial character, he
ii know no party, but the American people;
and will acknowledge no leaders but the ■Spirit
Justice, and his own conscience, in the fate
oilier establishments, he lias learneU the des
y which must always await the Editor, who
i'ers himself to he made the tool of a party,
iis thrust forth as the “ Vat’s paw” m all
arrets; pushed forward as principal in con
iversie s, where lie lias no interest, and can
in no honor; and must bear the odium 01 sins
hicii are not his own. If the designs of the
rty succeed, he is in. glected, because his scr
ees are no longer useful. If the sinister de
gas of the party are detected and lad—the
iuter, who was only an instrument in the hands
aiore cunning men—who only became odious
<m assuming other people’s actions—is sacri
ted to a selfish policy; he is made Hie scape
its, and sent forth into the wilderness with
it sms of the whole party on his head.—
Famed, therefore, by the example of others,
re Editor of the Museum will lend himself to
e views of no party. tie will advocate the
terests of TliE PEOPLE, and trusts to them
>ne for patronage.
In the competition between citizens for posts
honor and profit, the influence of the .Muse
a shall always be exerted on the side of vir
e and talents. The spirit of our government
lines a prescriptive right in any person to of
•e. Honors and offices are not the property
iany family or party —but are the fiisz gift
the people; and should be bestowed upon
ose whose virtues have rendered them lllus
ious. They should be bestowed as a reward
it eminent services rendered the country—and
ot held out as bribes for political duplicity.
Sncli have been the views and principles which
ave governed the Editor ot the Museum in
is past course, and which he modestly hopes
ill continue to guide him for the future. In
inciting an increase of patronage, which may
mder the Museum more extensively useful, the
Iditor trusts that the principles lie has support
1, are such as will advance the best interests
i his country, and which the enlightened ci
iciis of Georgia cannot but approve. With
‘esc impressions, and these-hopes, this PIiOS
ECI'US is submitted to a liberal public.
