SAT UR DAY MO t V/.YS, August 24.
TO COtIRESFOSDEXTS.
••The people” is on file. ‘
Castigatoy” is received. But it will be of r.o
advantage to inform the public of what he in
tends doing. — IVhat thou doest do quickly.
It has been hinted to us that many of our rea
ders do not fully understand the reports of the
board of health. It is the intention of the board]
we believe, to report only the new cases which j
have occurred during the preceding week.— |
Consequently no notice is taken of the old cases; j
and no est mate can be form ed from their reports,
of the whole number of sick in the city or the
fate of the subjects of cases formerly reported; |
whetherthe fever has changed its type from inter
mittent to remittent; or whetherit has terminated
in death does not appear. Nothing of this can
be ascertained from the reports of our board of
health We have the fullest confidence in the vigi-j
lance of the board, & the accuracy of their reports, i
as far as they go. But we would suggest to them’
the propriety of informing the public as to the I
result of cases formerly reported. And the more
so. as fevers at this season, are very aptto change
their tvpc; and from a case of mild intermittent,
as reported by the board, in a day or two assume
the character of the most malignant remittent.— j
If the board take no notice'of this change, the,
public will be very ignorant of the actual state
of our city.
The northern mails which have been delayed
by the sickness of the driver and high water,
arrived yesterday afternoon. Papers which have
been accumulating at the post'offices between
this and Charleston, for the last fortnight, pour
ed down upon us all at once in overwhelming
numbers.
Ms. Bahteet —In your paper of the “O',h, ’ou
ask the question “should not Council impose a
quarantine on vessels from N. York ”
Every person acquainted with the illiberal sys
tem enforced there, against vessels and passen
gersarriving from this port, will readily answer
in the affirmative. It matters not. whetherthe
crew and passengers of a vessel arriving from i
Savannah at Staten Is’and, be in good health—
three or four days sblution„appeavs to these con
tagionists, indispensible to prepare our citizens,
for any social intercourse with the pure inhabi
tants of that city—therefore with all due deffer
ence to the learning and wisdom of our City
Council I recommend, that all vessels arriving
from New-York between this and the Ist of Nov.
be compelled to ride quarantine at Four Mile
Point, four days, and thereafter (no evidence of
yellow fever appearing on board) be permitted
•to come up.tothe cty —but if the Evenkitr Post
or any other evidence of contagion should be
foAnd on hoard any such vessel then and in that
case Hie’ quarantine ought to be extended at least
ten days longer. _ A & Z.
Public Health. —We regret to perceive by the
report of the hoard, that seveftl new cases of
yellow fever have occurred, all trace . to the infec
ted district. It becomes ‘ therefore necessary
that the inhabitants should remove forthwith, and;
all intercourse cease. It will he remembered that ■
this precaution in the Old Slip fever, was of a
great moment, as no cases occurred which could
not be traced to that sip; and in the present in
stance, if the enclosed boundaries are avoidc.',
there is no danger.—-V. V. Nat. Adv. lOthinat.
From the N. Y. Daily Adv. 12th inst.
FROM CURRACOA.
By the schr. Lady’s Delight, was received a file
Qf papers to the 2’ ‘th July.
The Curracoa Courant of the 20th announces
the arrival of the U. S schr PoTpoise, lieut. Hom
age, from a cruise and 1 st from Puerto Cabello.
The Porpoiseaccompanied-into port the schr -• n
telope of N. York, which she had fallen in with
at sea. The A. had been captured by the boats!
of the Br. frigate Ligeria, and given up. Tbej
Porpoise had sailed from Curracoa on a cruise. !

FROM GIBRALTAR.
By the ship Glenthorne. f om Gibt altar, we have
received a file of the Cibraltar Chronicle to the
28th of June. The answer of the King of Spain
to the late address of the Cortes wrs communica
ted to the Assembly at Gibraltar on the J9th of
Jure His majesty expresses the hope, that as
the first powers of the state acted in concert to
checkihe evils in Spain, the agitation of the pub
lic mind will subside, and all hopes will Be given
Up of overthrowing the present system.
The King promises to use whatever power is
vested in him to promote the strict observance of
the Constitution, and relies, for the happy issue
of his exertions, on the co-operation of the Cor
tes, the good sense of the nation, and th enthu
siasm and gallantry of the army and militia.
The Spanish Cortes have approved of most
of the measures proposed by their special com
mittee. The committee recommended the arm- j
ing. of the militia; to promote enthusiasm byj
means of dramatic, performances, songs, &c.; to,
publish the B shops and other ecclesiastical su
periors who oppose the consolidation of the new;
system, and even to banish them from the king-;
dom, and to seize their temporalities iftheydo
liot publish I astoral Letters clearly shewing the’
conformity of the Constitution with the Catholic
Religion, Stc.&c.
1 lie Cortes have recommended to the atten
tion of the government a it emorial of a phy
sician of Macii id, who offers to ptove that the
yellow fever is not contagious.
A plot had been formed at Aranjuez, but was
frustrated, in which the conspirators intended
to carry off the king.
