The late Fire.— On Friday affprnoen,
about one o’clock, the tenement in the
Sou'h-Carolina College, occupied by Pro
fessor Henty, was discovered to be on fin-.
An hour before, a transient ala'm bad been
excited by the chimney’s having taken fpe
bat after repeated observation from situa
tions cum uauding a view oi ‘he roof, ad
apprehension of danger was dismissed.—
In the mean time however, some of the
burning soot appears to have insinu tt ‘d it
self between the brick-work and a wouden
ledge which surrounds the chimney, and
from thence to have advanced to the inter
im’ of the roof. The flame when firs* de
tected did not exceed a yard squ i'e, and
if a copious supply of water cmild have
beeneasily a’ and speedily obtained, ! he mis
chief might have been obviated, without
the necessity of creating a general alarm.
Even under existing tiis id vantages, such
timely exertions were made by the inhabi
tants of the College, more particularly by
Messrs. M. and Player, aided by !wo laith
ful and intrepid negroes in the service of.
Dr. Cooper, as very greatly to check the J
progress of the flames, until the arrival o<;
•"ore effectual assistance, As soon as the
intelligence reached the town, the citizens
accumpained by their servants tvpaited t
the spot with the gieatest alacrity, mil hav
ing their force immediately under the r >of
judiciously directed by one of the War
dens as well as supported by the engine*
from without, the progress of the devouring
sleraent was, in a very short time complete
ly arrested.
While more serious and immediate mis
chief was apprehended, nothing could ex-
Ce “d the kind and active industry of all
present in rescuing the Books, Furniture,
and other valuable* of the family. Their
l“*s has bpeq quite trifling. The injury
done to the house is almost eptirely con
sued to the roof and the rooms immediate
ly der if.
Maisacrt if the Greeks.— Some fag
mane English wri’ers are calling upon the
government to attempt, by means of a
manifesto, or otherwise, to check theenor
mitie- committed by the Turks upon the
Greeks, and by way of retaliation, some
time* by the latter against the former.
The editor of the London Morning Herald
says it would be ‘'ridiculous for England
, to issue a command to Tut key to do so and
so, with regard to the Greeks, unless she
had in readiness 100,000 men, and a large
fleet to back her command, besides a sur
plus revenue to a great extent to pay them
with. Besides, is it not to the interest of
England to uphold Turkey against Jlus
sia? What would become of England's
territories in the East Indies, if Russia
were to get hold of Constantinople, then
join the Greeks, the Persians, the Austri
ans, the Prussians—piobably the French
and the Spaniards—and these Countries
shning the East Indies between them >
W-believe that all ihese nat ions Would
have no objection to ease England of this
[immense territory; and even our good
, fiends in the United States might, by pos
sibility, ‘ike ’ocime in for a slice too.’*
jThe cautious editO’ We believe need b.■[’
i under no apprehension as to the latter dis-s
ificul yhe has suggested. If Great Brit- ‘■*
ram should be so disposed, she may drioej 1
ievery Turk into the Med.terranean, or
| even the Persian Gulf, without any far ‘
l that the United States will inieifere. We
have do idea of “slicing” up the East In
[dies. It is the commerce of ti e east—not
the land— that we want. In sober earn*
jest, however, the above extract furnishes
the true reason of the’ friendshid of Eng
land lor the Porte, and their coldness to
wards the Greeks What would eventu
ally become of England’s Indies, if Russia
should get hold of Constantinople ? Aye,
there’s the rub. It is not because England
l"Vfs the Greeks less, or the ‘Pin ks more
—but because she loves India better than
either—tnat she has exerted herself to
keep the peace.

tIIESE celebrated Pills have been in exten

now become the most common Family Medicine
of any in the Uniied States.
The very great reputation these Pills have
gained all over the U. Slate.., West-Indies and

and vend other Pills, which they call Lee’s Piih.
anil they are often pass and ufl as the genu 1(U .

lately taken, they hope, an ‘ertect;., a t s tep to
guard the public against being ,mposed on by
the spurious Pills. The direction paper which
goes with each box of F, c genuine Pills, is al
ways .uynetl by CharK s Lee ot Windham, and on
the outkiile of the envelope is Perkins’ .Stereo

with ivd ‘, n k, and which is signed by Isnai

the audacity to state that they are my agents
1 have long known their characters too well.—
They are not, nor ever have been agents ot
mine, nor have they ever been entrusted by me
with any of said Pills.
|£v tv person on inspection will notice tnat
the Pills they offer, have not on the outside of
the wrapper the “Tests” printed in Red Ink and
signed by me in my own hand writing, and that
the Bills of Direction to the spumous Pills are
not signed by Charles Lee, as the geuume ones
a * The printers in the western and southern
states could not confer a greater favor on then
customers, .ban giving this ailvertisemt nt a few
insertions, as the good citizens of those states
are much imposed on with spurious s i ids
