A patriotic townsman hM bees for fome
time in correspondence with a female soqosin-

posed to be a lady. This New York female had
requested her Charleston correspondent lo
furnish full details of Charleston news, and
oooMionalir to send a Charleston peper; oa
many people, male and female are fona of rea
ding papers when their friends or correspon

This request wss frequently complied with,
and in the last case the peper sent wss th#

bardment of Fort Sumter.
The daughter of New York, with true New
York instinct of prostration before a mob ora
local idol, returned the Courier with the fol-
' dewing letter:
New York, April 28th, 1861.
Mu.
You will oblige me very much by sending
me no more of your dattardly, lying, traitorous
publications. All friendship from this at end.
To the Aroh Traitoress Mrs. , of Char
leston, S. C.
The daughter of South Carolina immediate
ly replied as follows:
Charleston, S. C., C. S. A., May 6th, '61.
Mrs.
I return your very lady-likt, veil-bred and
highly courteous note, and most confess it to be
a novel inroduction, worthy of your class, cf
which, however I have no particular knowl
edge, as you are the only specimen of whom 1
have ever oome in contsot.
Mrs. ,
I enclose (his to Mr. , your husband,
as the pipers were sent to him by my husband,
who probably thought him a man of intelli
gence, and one who would like to hear both
sides of a controversy, and I oan soaroely
think he is^a party to your very elegant mode of
acknowledging a courtesy.
All further intercouse is declined.
The unfortunate husband of this New York
piece of upstart vulgarity is a member of the
Seventh (Regiment; and if there are many
wives in New York capable of such a return
for solicited'courtesy and favors, we are not
at all surprised the men of New York are rea
dy for fight, or for going any where from
home.—Charleston Courier.
We take the following from the New
York Day-Book:
Gen. Wool Deposed.
A very strange and incomprehensible order
has been reoeived from Gen. Scott, dirceling
Gen. Wool, who hae been in this eity for some
time past superintending the departure of
troops, to return to his headquarters in Troy.
The terms of this letter have created quite a
storm of indignation among our citisens. Gen.
Scott assumes that Gen. Wool is “in infirm
health’' and not able (o assume a command in
the field, while many people do not hesitate to
ssssrt thet be is in mors robust health than
Gen. Soolt himself. “The Union Defense
Committee” are very much displeased with
Gen. SooU’s order, and it is said it has damp
ened their ardor not a little, and will render
them cautious about volunteering their ser
vices further. The following is the remarka
ble letter of Gen. Soott, sent by Gen. Wool to
the committee :
Headquarters or the Army, \
Washington, April 28, 1861. j
Major General John E. Wool, U. S. A., Com
manding Department of the East, Nev York
City:
General:—The General in-Cbief desires
me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter
of the 25th inst., and lo say, in reply, that the
very great necessity which exists for carrying
on the business of the several Staff Depart
ments with system under their proper chiefs,
compels him to request you will give no or
ders interfering with the purchase or issue of
army supplies, such orders being in all cases
dictated by the General in-Chief himself.
The General regrets your infirm health does
not permit him to assign you to an important
command away from your headquarters, end
he oommends that you return to Troy to oon-
duot the ordinary routine duties of your De
partment and for the recovery of your health
known by him to be feeble.
I have the honor to be, General, very res
pectfully, your obedient servant.
[8ignsd,] E. D. TOWNSEND,
Assistant Adjutant General.
P. 8.—To prevent waste of the exceedingly
liberal means offered by the oommitteee of
•rivate citisens, for the use of the United
Kates, the General hu begged that the pur
chMe abd forwarding of all ordinary or regular
army supplies by such oommitteee may be
made in oonsultation with the several Staff
Officers charged with those duties in tbs prin
cipal oities. This, of course, does not apply
to sztra stores not authorised bv Army Regu
lations, which committees or friends may de
sire to provide for the voluntary troop*.
Respectfully,
[8igncd,] E. D. Towroikd,
Assistant Adjutant General.
The publication of the above letter by per
mission of Gsn. Wool will, no doubt, tend to
still further embarrass ths rslations between
tbet officer and the General-in-Chief. Being
contrary to the raise of military etiquette for
a subordinate offioer te cive publiely to the or
ders of tbs CommandtMn-Chief* ws shell not
be surprised if Gen. Wool should be et ones
Court-Martialed.
