The Richmond Whig says it has reason
to conclude that the true cause-of Secretary
Randolph’s resignation, was that he felt himself
so fettered and hampered in his office, as to be
forced to the conclusion that he could be more
useful in some other service

For the Southern Confederacy.
Alice Estelle, second daughter of Joseph J.
and Elizabeth Spincer,. was violently attacked
with diptheria ; and after a painful illness of a
week, -he calmly slept in death, on the evening
ol 3d November. Little Alice was a lonely
child, beloved by all who knew her, and sadly
will she be missed in the school room, on the
play ground, but most ot all, in the home circle
—when, surrounded by fond parents and a lov
ing sister, she had pointed to her that haven of
rest whither she has gone. Upon being told by
her father that she must die, she replied with
great composure, “I am not afraid to die, but I
don’t want to leave you.”
It is beautiful to see in one so young, that death
was robbed of all its terror and that her trust
ing heart was stayed in Him ‘who is mighty to
save.”

The Christian Advocate.—This is the title
of a religious newspaper just issued in this city,
under the auspices of the Hoiston Conference ot
the M. E. Church. It is edited and controlled
by Rev. C. W. Charlton. Mr. Charlton is well
known to most of our readers as an elegant and
forcible writer, and his experience as an editor,
is a guarantee that the Advocate will come up
to the highest standard of our Southern period
ical literature. Religious periodical reading has
become scarce since the beginning ot this revo
lution, and it may, therefore, be reasonably an
ticipated that the Advocate will receive a large
patronage. It is about the sixe of the Southern
Confederacy; well printed, and published at $3
per ahnuni in advance. The regular issue will
commence about die first of January. In the
meantime, the preachers throughout the Con
ference are urgea to make exertions to get up a
subscription list.— Knox. Reg.
A Public House Without Sheets.—1 he Al-
abami House of Representatives yesterday de
cided by a nearly unanimous vote, that Christo
pher Columbus Sheets, of Winston county, is
no longer worthy to occupy a seat in the Legis
lature as a reperesentative of any portion of the
people of Alabama. The evidences of his com
plicity with the enemy were complete, and it
was therefore due to the dignity of the House
that he should be expelled.

Richmond, Nov. 21.—The Examiner this
morning, sajs that an absence of voucher* for
the sum of a million and a half of dollars h&s
been discovered in the Medical Purveyor’s
department. An official investigation, now
progressing, will, it is believed, not reveal
any eriminality, but informality and looseness
in the administration of the affairs of the
Purveyor’s department.
SECOND DISPATCH.
When the railway train was within one mile
of Fredericksburg this morning, the enemy
opened fire upon it from the opposite side cf
the river without effect. They fired several
shots with long range guns, but were not re
plied to.
The general situation is unchanged. The
enemy have not yet attempted to cross the
river. No news from our army

Owr Markets.
Trade continues good. Coffee and sugar are
in better demand. Nails ar« also in good de
mand. Iron is very scaree and high. Cotton
goods dull—light stook—prices stationary.—
Corn, fodder, potatoes, meal and pease in great
demand. * Negroes rather dull—good supply
in market. Clark, Grubb, Cohen and Crawley
& Bro, each, have good lots on hand. Flour
is scarce— th& Government Agent seized a
large lot, and paid a little lesB than the regu
lar market price, which of course, will have
a tendency to keep fiour out of the market.—
Salt still keeps dull.
The Cane.—The Baton Rouge Gazette euys
the recent fierce, withering frost has played
sad havee with the sugar cane. But little
seed cane on the lowlands will be saved, and
many will be compelled to depend npon the
stubole and rattoons for next year.

Mobile, Nov. 20.—A letter in the Adver

the army has been on the quivive for a week
past in anticipation of. an attack from the
enemy. To-day information is received that
the Abolition -is have retired some distance,
From their movements, it is difficult to con
jecture whether they meditate an attack upon
Pemberton’s army or not. It 19 certain they
have advanced their forces from Jackson
Bolivar, and a portion from Corinth to La-
Grange and Grand Junction. At the latter
place Grant has established his headquarters
Our army occupies a position of great natu
ral strcng.h, well fortified, and have been
manifesting great impatience to advance upon
the invadiDg force. Our troops deem them
selves invincible. Our army will not fall
back unless the enemy attempts a flank move
ment from the West upon Greneda; however,
it is now improbable that the enemy will ha
zard au engagement.

Richmond, Nov. 19—Raleigh ‘„the 18th.—
The Legislature convened yesterday. To day
Governor Vance sent in his message. He
takes strong grounds for vigorous prosecution
of the war. He proposes to reserve a force
for State service, of 10,000 men, to be dis
charged in the spring, in time for their farm
ing operations. Ha complains of the bad faith
of the Confederate Government in sending
agents into the Clate for clothing and sup
plies after agreeing not to do so if the State
undertook to clothe her own troops. He urges
stringent measures against speculators, and
still more stringent measures for the appre
heusion of deserters. The bulk of the Mes
sago is concerning local affairs. Nothing from
Eastern North Carolina.

The enemy had made no attempt to cross

no cannonading since Monday. Many of the

to a battle before long. The force of the ene

is believed to be large. The people are all
