Our Special Richmond Correspondence.
Richmond, Jan. 12, 1863.
The Sonata was again to-day without a
quorum. These Senatorial stragglers should
be advertised as deserters. There is uo ex
cuse whatever, for their absence from the
seat of Government, at a time like the pres
ent, when the country is bleeding at every
pore. Delay in transportation cannot be ad
mitted as an’ excuse, as the absentees- could
have started in time to reagh Richmond on
the first day of the sessionLegislation is
at a stand still; even the President’s Mes-
sage^|hioh is looked for with so much inter
est by the country at l trge must be kept back
until the Senate is organised.
The House entered upon business with ev
ery promise of an active session. Governor
Foote’s Resolutions which 1 have already
transmitted to you, were received with pro
found attention and referred to the Commit
tee on Foreign Relatione. The flour cou
tracts with Crenshaw & Co, of this oily, was
brought to the atteniion of the House anti
gave rise to a most ey citing and animated
discussion. Gov. Footo made some astound-'
ing statements relative to this contract, whioh
it is to be hoped, ibo foots when brought to
light, will show to bo groundless. As the
question is still before the House, I shall for
bear expressing any opinion as to its merits
until all the facts are properly presented, and
justice can be done both to the pnblio and
the parties involved in the transac'ion.
The Legislature of Virginia were engaged
to-day in a fruitless effort to elect a Senator.
There are four candidates presented for that
position, viz: Gen. John B. Floyd, Messrs
Russell, Rives and Allen. Gen. Floyd’s best
friends desire his election chiefly because
they-do not wish him to remain'in a position,
as he ie, at this time, of even quari indepea-
denco of Confederate direction in the mili-l
Merchants, tary service.- The idea prevails that t .e Vir
ginia State line is not in strict harmony with
the military policy of the Government.-^-

Camp bear Fredericksburg, Va., t
January ‘Jib, 1863. j
There bas been a great dearth of news in tbe
army of Northern Virginia since I last wrote
you. We atill remain tn statu quo, facing the
“nigger stealers,” with nothing to vary tbe
monotony of camp life, except the advent of
the holidays. They came and swiftly passed
away ; brought with them but little merriment,
bnt slight enjoyment, and left behind a pang ol
bitter remembrances in every breast. The
dcasant memories of the past were all as “Dead
Sea fruit.” Let ns all prav that the next advent
of the New Year will find us all at home,
“Eojoying peace our valor won.”
Tbe army for the past few days have been
much exercised on the subject ol the news from
the South-west. One day we learn from un-
. hied such a rural property for sale. It is situa
ted one and a bal I u ilo* West of Decatur, on tho Fay-

doubted authority that Bragg has won a glorious
1 of
victery, and that the Troy of tbe Mississippi is
still untaken—the next day we bear Bragg is
in fall retreat and Vicksburg fallen. So fre
quent are the contradictory stories, that the sol
dier now denies tbe fact of » battle having been
fought, and insists that there U no such place
as Vicksburg on the maps. Como what may of
these things the veteran army of Virgioia will
ever be found worthy of their brief yet glorious
career.
Qn yesterday General Hood reviewed the gals
lant Brigade of Georgia troops commanded by
Gen. G. T. Anderson. This Brigade coniists
of tbe 8tb Georgia, Major E. J. Magruder com»
mander; lltbGeorgia,Col. Little; fthGoorgia,
Lieut. Col. Carmichael; 10th Georgia Battalion,
Major Rylander, and the 9th Georgia, Major
Jones.
The men were all in good health and spirits,
and, thanks to tbe good folks at home, comfort*,
ably and neatly dad. Their discipline was
effective and nearly perfect, and seldom have I
seen soldiers bear themselves better. The per
formances of this Brigade in battle will claim a
prominent position in the temple of Georgia’s
historic glory.
Toombs’ brigade has been removed from (
Hood’s Division and placed in that cammanded
by Gen. Pickett. They are stationed some*,
where in onr rear.
The health of tbe army is good. A few cases
of small pox have appeared, but as yet it is not
an epidemic among ns. The troops have all
been re-vaccinated, and we hope to escape this
-ft,
'redericksburg still lies neglected and desert
ed. A few families have returned to their des
ecrated hearths, but the the majority of tbe
citizens remain away. The collections in the
army for their relief reaches a very large sum-
showing that the brave are always generous.
For the past week the weather has been lair
but very cold, and the evidences are that the
winter has set in in earnest. We have plenty
of wood, and the camp fires that we light are
equal to those that burned in Sherwood forest
when Robin Hood wax' x blythe iorester and
wore bis coat of green. T
