Onr Special Correspondence from Bragg’s
Army.
In Camt near Manchester, Tes.v. 1
January 14th, 1863. j
General Bragg, ’tis said, will make a stand on
Dnck river. The army is thoroughly rested,
and the men seem cheerful and ready for another
fight. . .Wharton and Buford arc doing-good ser
vice on our front. Every day they send to-the
rear squads of Yankee deserters, who say they
are tired of the war and want to be paroled.—
Wheeler is on the wing. That he will render a
good account of himself is certain beyond a
doubt. Morgan is at recruiting his hOrscs
and men. 1 am told by a participant that his
last brilliant expedition into Kentucky was ac
complished with the loss of only 3 men killed,
18 woundod and a few prisoners.
Your Knoxville correspondent, in giving an
account of the .fight at Murfreesboro’, said many
things which constrain me to believe that he must
have been in Knoxville during the battle as well as
at the date of his letter. The only correct
statement in -his account is where be speaks of
the rain on Saturday morning. Beyond a few
artillery duels and some ■ skirmishing, Friday
was a day of qniet until 3 o'clock in the after
noon, when Breckenridge’s Division was thrown
agmin.t the enemy’s lelt. Our wonnded and
killed coo Id not be, counted by hundreds, let
alone thousands. Not a bayonet was crossed.
Our troops foil back because Geo. Breckenridge
ordered them to do so, having accomplished all
that the nature of .the ground would permit.—
The enemy did not*pursue. They did not ap
proach within half a mile of onr rifle pits. The
tight was not renewed on Saturday; bat instead,
the day was aaasxai/y quiet nntil dusk, when
the Is; and 2nd Tenn. (Yankee) regiments at*.*
tacked Chalmera’ left, and were promptly re
pulsed. As the friends of Breekcuridge’s Divis
ion will doubtless be glad to know that the men
of this Division have not been slaughtered by
tiswnsfr ia engagements that never occurred.
I hope the papers which published the account
referred to above will also insert the facts which
1 furnish yon. My presence on the field enables
me to attest to the correctness of what I assert.
