Deserters from the abolition army are com

At Wilmington, the utmost confidence is

Gen. 8terlug Prior.—This distinguish
ed General passed here on Saturday last en
route for Richmond. He came out upon the
platform of the car, and during the few min
utes the cars stayed, he entered freely into
conversation with the by-standers. The Gen
eral is the picture of health, large and re
bust, will weigh over two hundred pounds, is
about fifty-six years of age, and very gray
for a man of that age. His fine personal ap
pearance, when associated with the history
of his military career through Missouri, can
not fail to give assurance thrt he is a general
of the highest order, which has been demon
strated by the many battles won through that
State, and the State of Tennessee.—Green-

Army of Northern Virginia, \
near Port Royal, Jan. 81st, 1863. j
This ts the camp of Stonewall Jackson’s
corps d' armee. I have visited the several brig
ades composing it daring the past two days,
and find them in good health and spirits—
ready, as they have ever been, to meet the in
solent 108; and 1 bat reiterate the opinion of
both officers and men, when I say that this
army, in its present position, is invincible.-
Whilst this army, generally speaking; is in
excellent condition, it is my duty to inform
the friends of Gen. Lawton’s Ga. Brigade,
composed cf the 13th, 26th, 31st, 38.h, 60th
and 61st Ga regiments, that many of the men
id this Brigade are entirely barefooted, and
many more who have some sort of shoes, are
without socki, which are sj necessary for a
soldier’s comfort in such a climate as this.—
In the 60th Ga. regiment 160 men did mot
participate in the battle of Fredericksburg,
because they were without shoes; and this
was to some extent the case with several other
regiments. Some of the men in this brigade
Dave been Supplied since, but still, many are
without any kind of a shoe.
Last Wednesday night aterrible snow storm
prevailed, covering the ground with 10 inches
of snow, and adding to the suffering of our
men.
Whose fault it is, that these brave men are
thus neglected, I shall not at this tima under
take to say, bat will call tho attention of our
State authorities and their friends and rela
tives in Georgia to their condition. I trust
that, in justice to our country’s defenders,
something will be done for their relief. I
am informed that what I have said in refer
ence to the condition of these regiments, is
equally true of many others from Georgia. The
men are bearing these hardships and suffer
ings without a murmur, which shows a devo
ted patriotism unequalled in the history of
the world- In this connection, I desire to
say to the benevolent and patriotic ladies of
theEmpire State of the South that thousands of
their fathers, brothers and friends in this ar
my are destitute of socks. I know that it is
only necessary for them to be aware of the
fact, and tbe soldiers will soon be supplied.
The roais here are all in horrible condi
tion ; in fact, many of them are impassable.
The ground was quits rotten before this snow,
and is oeeoming worse daily.
On the road fron Gainey’s Station to this
place, I saw teams stalling with empty wag
ons, white every few hundred yards a wagon
was mixed in the mud to the axles, and aban
doned ; and in the road and roadside, at short
intervals, lay numbers of dead males and
hones. At one plaoe the road was literally
blockaded by the bodies of three dead mules,
lying stretched in the mud and water in one
hedge.
From this you will see that an advance of
the enemy soon is utterly impossible.
Of course it would not be prndent for me
to say anything definite about the number of
our men on the line of the Rappahannock, or
the strength of their position, but it is
enough to know that both are amply sufficient
to repel any effort the enemy may make on
our lines; and if Hooker should cross the
river with his hordes or thieves and robbers,
it will be only to meet with certain and in
evitable defeat.
Our men now all have tents with chimneys
or log nuts, and most of them are pretty well
supplied with blankets.
It is amusing to see what a variety of crude
hats are constructed. They may be seen in
everv riwpe and sue imaginable. The chim
neys are generally topped with an empty
flour barrel—both heads being broken out.—
The rations now are flour and pickled pork,
bat they are rather short oa aooount of the
bad condition of the roads. In fact, I have
no doubt that, unless great industry is need
ia “polling” the road from the railroad to the
army, it will be impocaible to snpply them
V ith commissary stores, and consequently
the army will have to change its position.
On my way out here I stayed a day at
