cmy upon the Capitol of the Confederacy—
the many battle-fields of the. East and the
West, crowned the Confederate arms with
victory and glory, saved our Capitol and
homes from the ruthless tread of a vandal
horde, won for ns character and reputation
among the-cold and selfish nations of Europe,
repeated in thunder tones the sublime truth
that eight millions of freemen with arms in
band cannot be conquered, sent an electric
thrill of joy to every loyal Southern heart,
and will yet develop results that will influence
the destinies of this continent, and of every
nation of Europe.
This is, in part, its written history. The
unwritten no man can tell. The bhst blood
of the South has been'freely poured out as a
libation upon Liberty’s altar. Sadness and
Borrow has invaded almost every household
in the Confederacy.
_ What will be the history of’03? is a ques
tion grave enough to exoite onr most serious
reflections. The enemy has been repulsed,
bathed, but his immense armies still occupy
our borders, and threaten with more matured
plans of invading our interior.
Burnside resigns, but “Fighting Joe” takes
the reins. Tho “boys” believe here that
■Joe” will fight, but of the issue we hav’nta
doubt. I could not, if l would, slate the
strength and situation of our forces here,
nor the-preparations that have been made to
receive “Fighting Joe,” &o. Suffice it to say
that in the ability of our Commanders, tho
courage of our soldiers and the justice of our
cause we have tbe inoat unbounded confi

Clippings from an Abolition Journal.
Our speoial correspondent Volunteer
sends the following itoms clipped from a late
issue of the Louisville Democrat :
The abolition papers now theorize that the
President is not bound to obey the Constitu
tion, but only to support it. -Being too weak
to support it whole, he has smashed it into
pieces of a sice suitable to his strength.
What shame and mortification it is th&t in
the grandest week for the grandest bbjects
mankind has ever known, the Chief Magis
trate of the nation should be a pitiful buf
foon, whose highest wit is a smutty joko.
It is stated that it was the Kentuoky rebel
regiments that were precipitated upon Rosen-
crans’ battery of a hundred guns. If so, few
must remain to tell the awful story.
The Newburyport Herald (Repntdican(
talks sensibly and ralioq&lly when it says:—
“There is no doubt that our Rchemcs of eman
cipation have concentrated the whole power
of the South, as Mr. Blair said, months ago,
it would, and made the rebels tun fold stron
ger than they otherwise would have been.”
as first reported.
