From Fort-Dauphin.
Capt. Nafon informs us, Fort Dau
phin was delivered to the French, just
previous to his failing, in purluance of
the article in the French and hpanilh
treaty, which cedes Spanish Hispaniola
tojthe French. The French immediately
on getting poffctfion, commenced the
exercise of their colonial defp.uifm up

French are again afloat in England.

By the Rhode-Ifland packets we learn
that a French corvette arrived at New
port about the middle of Lift week, direst
bom Guadaloupe, and informs, that 12
14 French 50 gun ships and frigates
arrived there, with a Britifti 50 gun
jbip, a prize. The corvette was chafed
XIUo Newport by a British frigate.

A letter from London by the latest
arrival states—that great apprehensions
had been entertained that the shippers
of rice from the United States, would
fuitain great lofies, in confcqucnce of the
great quantities of rice imported from
India—but .these apprehensions had en
tirely subsided. T'he rice from India
tiai turned out so bad, being of an in
ferior quality, that American rice had

“ Friday, the Washington, Ameri
can Fail India man, 750 tons, through
the folly or villainy of the two pii ts
(he had taken on board, went on fhoie
on tie Lizard Point; the (hip will be
iolt. She was esteemed the fineft fit ip
belonging to the States; her cargo which
can be got at is bringing up here, confift
iogof bales of silk, muffins, India hemp,
&C. ‘ It is supposed about 300 tons of
(ugar, and a great quantity of rice, will
be wholly dettroyed, the whole is citi
mated in the country at 55,000 pound.
The captain had sugar on board to the
amount of 14,000 dollars uninsured.
She came from Calcutta, but whether
for the account of the Engliffi cannot be
known; The pilots are abfeonded.

Tuefday last arrived Schooner Sally,
Capt. Win. Kirkly, 17 days from New-
York. On the 25tli inst. experienced
a very fevers gale of wind at N. E. and
in icudding under his fore-top fail near
Cape May, carried away his fore-top
fail yard and fail, together with the top
gallant fail, and hove too under a close
reefed fore-fail until the gale abated.
On the 27th, off Cape Henry, fell in
with Admiral Murry’s (leaf, confifling
of two line of battle Ships, and five Fr£
gates ; were boarded by an officer from
the Admiral’s Ship, and treated with
politeness; after the neceflary enqui
ries, were permitted to proceed with
out further detention.
The officer who boarded Capt. Kirk
ly informed, that one of the fleet, Capt.
Wimms, had gone into Virginia to re
fit.
Notwithstanding the superiority ” of
the naval power of Great-Britain, the
French traverse the ocean, and make im
mense captures. It is highly propable
that great part of one of the Jamaica
fleets, lately met with by an American
velfel, owing to the finallnefs of the con
voy, will be captured ; as a superior
force of the French were in pursuit of
them, and were within five or fix hours
fail.
