I came to the State ot Georgia the latter part
of the year 1621, iu search of employ mont; ou
the twenty-seventh day of December, JH^l, 1
readied Madison, and on tho second day of Jan
uary, 182J, I commenced keeping bar for a man
by the name of John Sandifor. On Wednesday
morning alter sale day in February, Sandifor
stepped up to mo, (I was then standing on the
public aquuo in front, of hie house and r aked me
how much money there was in the bar 1 answered
instantly, ‘ forty dollars” he replied,“there is but
Uiiriy-tbreo," 4< 1 replied there wan forty there
a few moments since, and 1 andaeuouma-
ble for forty. We went into the room, searched
the desk in which there was much rubbish, and
found forty dollars! Not another word was
said. He was appaieully satisfied, and I
thodglitj Was collecting the money to make
some .payment. I coniined to do business for
him, find as I be’ievod, to his ontire satisfaction,
until alter March court. The next morning af
ter court had adjourned, ho asked mo for a set

commenced business with Inin, 1 had forty dol
lars which sum, I loaned him un the second day
after 1 set in. 1 had used sotno of it to pay for
making some clotlios, which loll mo with but
little cash. When ho borrowed tho monoy in
the presence ofThoinus Gowtly, ho stated to
ine to use whatever money 1 wauled out of the 1
drawer. Alter wo l;ad sottlod and ho paid over
to mo tho small sum then due me, about
twonty-severi dollars which is all tiro money
I then had, and oil the property with the
exception of a silvor watch, which 1 put

attempted to slriko him with it, my arm was
caught by a young man by the name of Robert

his business for his board I wds young) and
entirely ignorant of tho worfd. He immediate
ly commenced the Work of sootlfmg; and so did
Ruchannan, I was begged to say nothing about
it, to look upon it as a mistake; Mundifer begged
me to remuin at his house, and promised to board
mo for uothing. I answered no sir. J ’uiow you;
nothing that you can do, or can promise, can
ever iuduce me to remain anoiher night under 1
your roof. J3rcukfu*t was then ready, and 1 eat,
