of New York city, in saver of Rhodes’ Fever and Ague-
Cure, that it contained neither Quinine, Arsenic, Mer
curp nor Strychnine, and having received numerous ap
plications for it, 1 was induced to send to Dr. Rhodes
for tiie medicine. Since then 1 have disposed of a large
quantity, mostly to residents of this city, who have inva
riablylioen cured by it, aud to whom 1 can refer. 1 am,
therefore, satisfied in recommending it to be all that
the proprietor represents.

of Chill Fever where it run four days, but the man came
to see me on the sixth day well satisfied.

‘if no cure no pay,’although I was not authorized by
you to do so; but I took the responsibility, on myself.—
But Hot a bottle lias come back, and as 1 atn almost out
of the article I wish you would forward me one. gross of
the bottles, if you see proper to do so, and 1 will be
punctual in payment. I inclose fifteen dollars on the
medicine 1 have received, for which please send me a
receipt. Ship the cure to me as soon a3 you can—there
never has been as much Chills and Fever since i lived in

An Incident of the Polk CT.mpaigu,
During Mr. Polk's recent canvass for
Governor, in iho State of Missouri, a
rich scene occurred at u tavern in Frank
lin county, where he stopped. Two sons
ot the Emerald Isle, late importations,
having heard that Mr. Polk was there,
wished to see him. Pat makes a wager
with his partner of a pint of whiskey, which
was readily taken, that he could not only
sec 3lr. Polk, hut dine with him. Pat
enters the dining room, meets the porter,

Polk that’s going to he Governor of the
State.’’ “Y on cannot see him, for he and
three other gentlemen are dining at pres

me way to see him! ’ “Y ou can’t see him,

wee bit, and let ine peep in.” “ Well,
there lie is—that man with a long head
at the end of the table.” As soon as the
door was opened Pat ran up to the table,

very welcome,” replied Mr. Polk, and
went on finishing his dinner. “ What news
did you bring from Ireland?” “Well,
yere honor, the latest news l know of was
a cow that had five calves.” “Why that’s
very strange, my friend, a cow having on

make out?” “The Lord love yer honor,
it done as I’m doing now.” “How’s
that?” “Standing here looking on, while

some dinner.” Os course Pat sat down and
eat a hearty dinner, in the course of which
he drank two glasses of wine. “Now,
Lord love yer honor, when I return to
ould Ireland, I can toll the people there
that i ate dinner and drank three glasses
of wine with one of the greatest men in
the United States.” “ Plow can you say
that, when you have drank but two ?”
“ Vis, yer honor, 1 know that, but i know
you will not let me go home with a lie in
my mouth.” Os course Pat drank the
other glass of wine and then left, shower
ing his blessings on Mr. Polk till outside
the door.

Pedestrian Itnce.
The Boston Times of Saturday says :
Quite a crowd gathered at the Lynn trot
ting Park, Boston, yesterday, to witness
the pedestrian races. The first race of
five miles, for which several entered, was
won by Patrick Whelden, in twenty-eight
minutes and thirty-eight seconds. The
next raee, in which the renowned Urin
nell was to run twenty miles in two hours,
was not accomplished. Grinnell gave out
on the fourteenth mile, he then being be
hind time This failure is attributed to
a blow which he received on tme of his
legs from John E. Taylor, who raised a
row just before Grinnell started to run.

sowed them but one year. We put ours
down in .November, and they stood the
winter well, making a good crop for the

Vmile Mr. Douglas was, on the LSth
ult., at .Juliet, Illinois, holding the audi
ence as it were entranced, a heavy shower
of rain came on. Not a mail, woman or
child moved —-still it rained, and there
they stood as if immovable. Mr. Dougina
paused, ami in a hui’st of feeling which
sent a thrill to every heart, exclaimed: —
“ When 1 see my own fellow-citizens, and
the women and children, willing; and con
tinuing to sit through a drenching tor
rent of water from tho heavens, to hear
me tell them of the danger to oni* glorious
Union, 1 feel new courage to go forth to’
battle for our common safety.” Even as
he spoke, the cloud passed mvay and a
bright ray of sunshine fell upon the
speaker. He paused again, and raising
his hand toward the sun, exclaimed —
‘ See, my friends, the cloud has passed
away, and heaven smiles once more upon
