Steamer Ossvicliee Sank.
We regret to learn that this steamer
sunk on Saturday morning, at Francis’
Bend, about two miles above Eufaula.
The Oswicliee left Columbus on Friday
morning with about 200 bales of cotton
besides other freight; we also learn that
she took on about 300 bales at Florence,
making about 500 bales she had on board
at the time of the accident. We have not
learned the cause of her siuking, but
presume she must have struck a rock.
Proceedings of the Inferior Court,
On Saturday last a special term of the
Inferior Court of Muscogee county was
held for the consideration of county busi
ness.
The condition of county bridges being
under disoussion, the contract for putting
in repair Woolfolk’s bridge across the
Upatoie, was declared forfeited, the time
given the contractor for doing so, having
expired. Advertisement was ordered to
be made for tbe repairs of the same, and
proposals to be left with the Clerk of tho
Inferior Court by Saturday, 21st Aj ril,
instant.
The Court also ordered the Clerk to
issue notices to the several Commission
ers of Roads in the county, to cause the
bridges in their respective districts to be
put in repair. The following is the law
regulating their duties :
“When any pnblio bridge shall require
repairing, it shall be the duty of the
Commissioners, or any of them, to give
notice in writing thereof, to the under
taker or one of his securities, stating the
repairs necessray to be made and requir
ing the same to be made within a reason
able time, to be set forth in said notice,
and if the same shall not be made within
such time, such commissioner or commis
sioners shall employ some other person
or persons forthwith to make such re
pairs, and shall immediately thereafter,
issue an executionagainstsuch defaulting
undertaker and his securities, for tbe
amount given for the said repairs with
cost.”
Wo learn that on a conference of the
Inferior Courts of Muscogee and Chatta
hoochee counties, the Court of the latter
county agreed to rebuild and keep in
repair Fuller’s bridge, as her portion of
those on the line across tbe Upatoie.
Mr. C. W. Chapman, Principal of the
Columbus Female Academy, was appoint
ed to fill a vacancy in tho board of School
Commissioners for this county.
For the Daily Sun.
Dear Sirs : The morning after the mo
ney had been taken from the Marine
Bank Agency in this city, several people
on the street mentioned the name of a
very honest and industrious mechanic in
this place, on whom some suspicion
seemed to rest. lam sure I can only
give expression to the general regret that
an innocent man should be so cruelly
wronged. I do hope that a generous
public will, by kind encoaragement, in
duce him to forget that such an injustice
had been done him. Yours, L.
♦
Columbus.
The Junior Editor of the South Western
Baptist, during a recent and brief visit to
our city, addressed a letter to that paper,
frojn which we make the following ex
tract :
Columbus has many advantages, which
will, erelong, make her a large city. She
is at the head of steam navigation on the
Chattahoochee river, a good river for
small boats. Then the “Falls” give her
any amount of the best “water power”
in the world. Every variety of machine
ry can be propelled by water at these
Falls. Several factories are now in ope
ration, and others will be built. There
are many machine shops of various kinds
in the city, all run by steam. The Mus
cogee Iron Works, corner of Oglethorpe
and Franklin streets, is doing a large bu
siness. Steam engines are built here,
boilers, and every variety of castings for
machinery, &c. Stanford & Golden have
an establishment, where, among other
things, they make “Massey’s Cotton
Screws.” Others might bo mentioned,
if space allowed. In addition to the cot
ton trade of Columbus, her manufactur
ing interests will make her one of tho
leading cities of the South.
***• * * * *
The plainest countryman will feel himself
at home here. This augurs much for the
good practical sense of the place. Every
thing in the oity bears the marks of ueat
ness and cleanliness, which makes it one
of tho healthiest places in the South.
New Orleans, April 12.—The inaugu
ration of the Clay Statue took place to
day, in the presence of an immense
throng from this and surrounding States.
The procession, which marched through
our principal streets, was one of the most
imposing turn-outs ever seen here, and
was four miles in length. com
panies from Mobile, Baton Rouge, and
other neighboring places, were in the
line. The weather was delightful. Bus
iness was generally suspended, and the
day was observed by all classes ns a holi
day. The oration of Mr. Hunt was a
glowing eulogy of the life and public
services of the Sage of Ashland. Nation
al salutes were fired at sunrise, noon,
and sunset, and flags were displayed
from the shipping and all public points.
There is a grand banquet to-night in
honor of the occasion. The entire cele
bration was most magnificent.
The Shad Season Actually Closed.
We have been credibly informed that
the shad season is now closed. As many
of our readers are not aware of the ex
tent of ihe shad catching, we have been
furnished with tho following particulars :
The boats used cost on an average SOO
each and seins from S4O to $65. There
have been employed as operatives the past
season on the Savannah and Ogcechee
Rivers, about 350 men, this includes mar
ketmen, &o. The wages of those parties
are from sls to S2O per month, and very
maDy of them are employed for the shad
season at the South and the Noith. Near
ly all of the Northern men have returned
to their homes. Those who now spread
their seines are those who are located
with us.— Savannah Express, 12 th.
% oung men’s Christian Association
From the Mobile Tribune, we learn
that the following delegates from Georgia
have passed through that city to attend
the Confederation of Young Men’s Chris

To the Planters of the South!—
The great difficulty in managing disease among
the negroes is their great aversion to take the
medicine prescribed by physicians. “Dr. J. Boyex
Dod’s Brandy Cathartic,” for Liver Complaint,
Costiveness, Dyspepsia, Bilious Affections, and all
diseases requiring a purgative, is a truly reliable
and effective remedy. Asa general Family Ca
thartic it is specially desirable, as it is pleasant to
tho taste and can easily he given to children and
negroes, who always refuse the nauseous pills
with which the country is flooded.
Every family should bo supplied with this val
uable medicine, as it is cheaper, more agreeable,
and equally effective as the best pills which are

Caution.—The article of Whisky now so
well known as “Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky,”
has established a reputation so universal as ren
ders it difficult for the maufacturer to keep pace
with the demand. This is the result of perse
vering energy in its introductiou, sustained by a
determination adopted at the outset, and never for
an iustantdeparted from, that its original purity
and excellence should continuo to the end.
Tlio common fate, attendant upon all such suc
cessful efforts, has overtaken the manufacturer.
It is imitated by unscrupulous imposters, and an
inferior and spurious article is palmed off upon
the community, to tho great detriment of the pub
lic as well as injury to the manufacturer, both in
emolument and well-earned repute. Every effort
has been made to guard against this piracy by a
Copyright of the Label, and by peculiar shapo of
the bottle.
I caution the public against this imposition upon
them and upon my rights, and I earnestly desire
such information from those who may possess it,
by having been victimized or otherwise, as will
enable me to protect the public and myself by
prosecution to tho utmost extent of the law. The
genuine “Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky ” is
put up in cases of 12 bottles each, with light yel
low Label, and sealed with yellow wax, with the
proprietor’s stamp on the wax, and sac simile sig
nature of the proprietor on the label. All other
articles are imitations.
Consumers can depend upon getting a pure arti
cle when they buy the Valley Whisky, as it is sold
by the bottle and case only.

AROMATIC VALLEY
“ttr:&3:xs-KV2T
From tho New Orleans Picayuuo.
THE purity of this Whisky is certified to by tho
leading Northern men of science, such as Dr.

of ours who understands such things, tells us this
“Aromatic” is a good “Aromatic;” and uh he is

It is pronounced by good judges to bo free from

are generally intended for Whisky aro hu imposi

DALY’S AROMATIC VALLEY WHISKY.
From tho Georgia Citizen.
It is a pleasant, unctuous stimulant, peculiarly
adapted to the cure of invalids who need a pure

DALY’S AROMATIC VALLEY WHISKY.
From tho Memphis Eagle and Enquirer.
It has been p.onounce l by the highest .scientific

We can recommend it with perfect coufideuco to
those who require an alcoholic stimulant for
medicinal purposes. “Dale’s ‘.alley Whisky’ ia

spirits which are eold in this market, for not one
