The Good Swim.
Messrs. Editors :—I noticed in your pa
per of this morning (April 6th) an article
headed a “Good Swim,” in which was
described what is called a wonderful feat
which might almost put to shame “By
ron’s exploit in swimming tho Helles
pont.”
Now, it may bo probable that when By
ron crossed the Hellespont tho feat was
something extraordinary, as the art of
swimming had not reached to any great
proficiency. It is well known to foreign
travelers that the Hellespont at the point
crossed by Byron is not more than a mile
and a half (probably not so much) wide.
Now any boy who has learned to swim
in this country would make nothing,
(provided he is ordinarily strong and
vigorous) of performing such a feat, even
every day during the week. Kdgar A.
Poe, of famous memory, wbilo he was
editor of the Southern Literary Messen
ger in Richmond, in the days of tho first
proprietor. Mr. T. W. White, swam from
the old town on Warwick up to the ship
landing at Richmond —a distance of more
than five miles, against ouo of tho stron
gest ebb-tides ever known in James river.
This feat was undertaken and accom
plished by the lamented author of the
“Karen,” merely upon the provocation
suggested by some writer in the Messen
ger that the “passage of the Hellespont”
was “almost a superhuman task.”
I dare assert that there are ono hun- I
dred boys in MempLis, between tho ages
of sixteen and twenty years, who would
hold in utter coutompt the boasted ex
ploit of the author of Don Juan.
Yours, VIATOR.
