THE DAILY SUN.
OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE CITY.
Tuesday Sluruilig, April 17, 18C0,
Application Books,
Fur cotton shippers, anew edition, tor Mile
at this office.
J. W. Pease lias received a ne;y supply of in
teresting books. See the list.
Jas. MePhilips, 140 Broad street, is in receipt
of another stock of ladies’ dress goods, which
he proffers to sell at low prices for cash. The
ladies will do well to read his advertisement
for particulars.
Messrs. Acee & Iverson announce to those
fond of the delightful beverage of Soda Water,
that their taste can be gratified at the Eagle
Drug Store. We are authorized to say, that it
will be served “free gratis, for nothing” during
the day, to which all are invited.
Mr. A. H. Lie Witt, owing to want of room to
accommodate the ladies, has stopped his auc
tion sales of Silver and Plated Ware, Jewelry,
Ac. He however, affords a chance to buy at
first cost for the next thirty days. See his ad
vertisement and call and examine his fine stock.
t ,
Families in want of the “stuff of life” are re
ferred to the several advertisements of the
Palace Mills. We would call especial attention
to the reduction of the prices of flour—an im
portant consideration to those in need of that
indispensable article. They have also a lot of
Kye flour, put up expressly for family use.
tee Cream.
The Strnppers have long held sway
in the ice cream business, and very pro
perly ; but they may look to their laurels
or our friend Charley Crichton will leave
them in the shade. We had the pleasure
of partaking of a plate at his new saloon
in the Columbus Bakery yesterday, and
are prepared to pronounce it superior to
anything we have eaten in this city for
many days. We say this without any
disparagement to friend Strupper, whose
skill in providing this delicious edible is
proverbial, and any man to beat him has
to “rise early.” See the advertisement
of Mr. Crichton.
An Invaluable Manual.
We return sincere thanks to Mr. Benn
Pittman, of the Phonographic Institute,
Cincinnati, Ohio, for a copy of his Manual
of Phonography. The work comprises
an introduction with sketch of the growth
of “pictorial representations of thought;”
the philosophy of speech ; the explana
tion of Phonography, with a presentation
of the Phonographic System in an order
ly sequence of explanations and exer
cises.
All the exercises, &c., are produced by
anew application of the process of elec
trotyping, that wonderful art of moulding
metals without heat. The work is very’
practical and an invaluable manual,
especially to beginners in the art of Pho
netic short hand.
K. G. C.—Gen. lllckley’s Address.
Pursuant to announcement, a fair au
dience assembled at Temperance Ilall,
Saturday night last, on which occasion
Gen. Bick'ley delivered an address, in
which, at considerable length, he defend
ed himself against the charges made
against him in New Orleans. That he
did so triumphantly, is evinced in the
satisfaction of all whom we have heard
express an opinion as to its sufficiency.
Time has not permitted a synopsis even
of the principal heads embraced in his
defense ; suffice it to say that, in our
bumble opinion, it was a complete refu
tation of the charges made against him
of imposition and deception of the K. G.
C.’s. As we have already stated, the
accusations were made by a few restless,
discontented individuals, who bad mista
ken the nature and designs of the organ
ization, and who always rendezvous at
that Babylon of the West, New Orleans,
and are eternally on the qui vive for any
thing that may afford a prospect of grati
fying their thirst for plunder and reck
less spirit of adveuture. They were not
regular members of the Order, and their
denunciations of Bickley, and sentence of
expulsion, are entitled to as much regard
as if half a dozen people in any city or
village would meet together and adopt
resolutions to the same effect. Well
knowing the character of the floating
population of New Orleans, he acted with
wisdom in refusing to establish a branch
of the Order in that city until it was
perfected elsewhere. Disappointment and
chagrin was at the bottom of the unjusti
fiable attack made on him, and well aware
of this, the initiated, who have the right
to complain, if necessary, have passed it
by without serious attention.
It is sufficient for them to know that
be has issued an order for a regular con
vocation of delegates of the K. G. C’s at
Raleigh, N. C., the 7th of May, when
the charges against him, as well as other
matters of vital interest to the order,
will be duly considered. His challeng
ing thus an investigation by those who
have the authority to acquit or condemn
him, is in itself a strong presumption
of his innocenca. There is no doubt that
the result will be his continuance as Com
mander-in-Chief, and endorsement as the
man most suitable and best fitted to car
ry its laudable designs into practical ef
fect.
From this city Gen. Bickley took bis
departure for Atlanta, where, according
to appointment, he addressed the citizens
of that city last night.

To tire Planters of tlie South!—
The great difficulty in managing disease among
the negroes is their great aversion to take the
medicine prescribed by physicians. “ Dr. J. Bovee
Dod’s Brandy Cathartic, ** for Liver Complaint,
Costivoness, Dyspepsia, Bilious Affections, and all
diseases requiring a purgative, is a truly reliable
and effective remedy. Asa general I‘amily Ca
thartic it is specially desirable, &b it is pleasant to
the tasto and can easily be given to children and
negroes, who always refuse the nauseous pills
with which the country is flooded.
Every family should be supplied with this val
uable medicine, as it is cheaper, more agreeable,
and equally effective as the best pills which are
made. CIIAS. WIDDIFIELD A CO., Proprietors,

A Card to the Ladies of Columbus.
—Your attention is respectfully called to “Dr. J.
Bovee Dod’s Imperial Gin Bitters,” and “Vege
table Cathartic Syrup.” The “Gin Bitters” act
on the Bladder, Kidneys and Urinary Organs ef
fectively, and as a remedy for female obstructions
were never equaled, and never can be surpassed.
No female in the should be without them.
The “Vegetable Cathartic Syrup” for infauts,
children and delicate females is a perfect substitute
for calomel, and yet as pleasant ro the taste as
honey, and equally as innocent and harmless in
its operation. It is as effective a3 blue mass or
calomel , and is purely vegetable. Is there a
mother in the laud who will fail to supply herself
with the above medicines.

Sore Throat Plague and Sore
Throat.—This quality of seizing hold and
causing the expulsion of depraved humors, is pos
sessed by no other mediciue than Brandretu’s
Pills. They operate only upon the tissues in
volved in, that is affected by the disease. In fact,
they seize upon those humors, not so much from
preference as from natural affinity, because their
life is below those of the surrounding parts, and
which, settling on the tissues of the throat, that
is, around the throat region, produces sore throat,
soi'C throat plague, and the severe headache and
fever. Within an hour after four or six pills are
taken, there is felt a peculiar creeping in the part
affected, a sort of collecting up of the diseased
humors ready for expulsion, No hurt or weaken
ing effect can ever arise from their use, because
they caunot act upon healthy parts. Taken early
they prevent all organic diseases. Oh how impor
tant in sickness to use medicine W'hich only extin
guishes the disease and leaves no evil effect behind.
Sold at Dr. Brandreth’s principal office, No. 294

DAILY SUN OFFICE, T~
Columbus, Ga., April 17, 1860, j
COTTON—The receipts yesterday amounted
to 271 bales, and sales 173 bales. There was a
better feeling perceptible in the market, with
out inducing any change in prices.
The past woolc has been another dull one in
all branches of trade, if wo except the lain y
dry goods trade, which hua boon uioro than
usually active in consequence of the opening
of the spring styles of goods. We avail our
selves of this opportunity to say that better,
liner, or more superior stocks of dry goods
have rarely been brought out than are on exhi
bition and sale the present spring.
Our dealers in groceries are doing but little,
as there is scarcely any demand outsido of the
local trade of the city. They are nevertheless
amply furnished with the necessary stocks for
a heavy trade.
Our manufacturing interests arc laboring in
dustriously to till up the many orders which
have been and are daily pouring in upon them.
Business with them is indeed in a prosperous
condition.
Cotton, the all absorbing topic of every-day
life and business, has well nigh run its course
for the season. The daily receipts continue
very light, while the shipments are not as heavy
as we anticipated, leaving a much larger stock
on hand than we supposed would be at this
stage of the season. The week just closed was
characterised by nothing more than its exceed
ing dullness—in fact, the cottons remaining on
factors’ boards for sale are not of a class to And
ready purchasers, being comprised mainly of
planters’ crop lots, and embracing a variety of
grades and shades in most instances. Hence
we find much difficulty in arriving at anything
like correct quotations. We give the annexed
table, which approximates as near facts as wc
can obtain:
QUOTATIONS.
Ordinary Leafy and Stained 5 to 8
Low Middlings 8% to 9
Middlings andy 2 to 10
Strict Middlings 10 “ to lOJ4
Good Middlings 10% to 10%
Middling Fair and above Nominal.
Receipts— From the Charleston Mercury of
the 13th inst., we find that the total receipts at
all the ports to that date amount to 4,118,158
bales, against • 3,362,214 bales same time last
year, showing an increase in the receipts of
755,944 bales. The increase in stocks is 112,787
bales. (We omit our usual tables for the want
of space, believing that the above summary will
answer our readers fully as well.)
