A Request. Will our warehouse friends
cause their stocks of cotton remaining cn

that our reporter may obtain the actual num

The alarm or “I-TRe” last night about 8 o'clock

the wood shop of Messrs. Eulloch & Radcliffe,
on Oglethorpe street, for the purpose of shrink

Now that wo are beginning to have a
foretaste of tho heat of summer, ice be
gins to bo in demand as almost indis
pensable to the season. Maj. Kellet, at

for a favor of the kind, yesterday.

Capt. S. II Hill,
We were pleased yesterday to notice
the return of Capt. S. H. Hill, the effi
cient agent in this city of Hamden’s Ex
press. lie has been absent for some
time for the purpose of recruiting his
health, which has been much enfeebled
by an attack of sickness. Wo were grat
ified to see that he has been benefited by
his trip and is “himself again.”
By the way, the Captain while in
search of health has not been unmindful
of tho interests of the company he repre
sents. lie has “posted” himself thor
oughly in relation to the duties on goods
and articles that have to pass through the
Custom House, and is prepared to inform
merchants and all interested, as to the
most expeditious means of obtaining
them.
Company I), Again.
One of our military companies, Compa
ny I), having received orders to march,
and expecting to leave Monday next, the
patriotic citizens of Columbus should feel
it incumbent on them to see that they are
provided for in every respect necessary to
their comfort. Quite all of the privates
are mechanics and laboring men, and
ordinarily sustain themselves by “ the
sweat of the brow.” But having thrown
aside their tools to respond to the call of
the Governor, it is the duty of those for
whose defense they have volunteered, to
subscribe liberally for furnishing them
with necessary equipments for personal
comfort, and. to assist them in getting off.
The comparatively small city of Eufaula
equipped two companies now at Pensaco
la; and surely Columbus, “the pride of
the Chattahoochee,” should not hesitate
to perform the like service for the only
one of hers that lias been ordered into
service.
W e understand that volunteers, non
residents ot the city, are arriving to join
the company. They will go into barracks
at tho Oglethorpe Hotel, and our citizens
should como forward and contribute to
sustain them. Tho officers of the compa
ny are doing all in their power, but it is
enough that they should go with the
company into service, without being
taxed to provide for those who have come
to join it. We doubt not that our citi
zens will respond liberally'to this call.
Preparing for Ihe Wars.
Tho Confederate States Government
has called upon tho State of Georgia for
two thousand soldiers to go to Fort Pick
ens, and in compliance with the call Gov.
Brown has given notice to the following
volunteer companies of this State to hold
themselves in readiness to march to that
post during this week:
The Gate City Guards of this place,
consisting of cighty-two men, under com
mand of Capt. Wni. L. Ez/.ard. This
company is composed of as noble a band
of patriots as ever took up arms in their
country's defense.
The Quitman Guards, of Forsyth, Mon
roe county.
N’ewnan Guards, Coweta county.
Two companies from Augusia, two
from Macon, and two from Columbus.
The above is from the Atlanta Confed
eracy. But one company of this city that
we have heard of have received such or
ders from Gov. Brown. The services of
all havo been tendered however.
