The Bishop auil th* firlgtulir.
Lis jop Vr timer, of Alabama, is out ih

shows that the Major Geuoral has takefi

The issue raised is not one ot loyally!.

the issue one of personal feeling toward

The church uses the "Prayer for the

in tmpersooauou of the Civil Authority.
The liso of the Prayer, under t ie present

of things. On the other ham, the mili

churches shall be closed until we aecole
to the demand. Thus the r.ai issue be
fore us is this : Shalt the secular or ihe
eottlesiastioai power regulate the worship
ot the churcn ?
In this conflict of powers—both “or
dained of Gol” in their respective
spheres —tha church labors, for the wo
meat, under serious disadvantages; for
we have neither the w.sh nor the power
to oppose force by foice. But wo must
ie careful to make it, evident that, whilst
we yield to military ioroe in the matter
of closing our houses of worship, we con
cede nothing of church prerogative to
secular auihorny, civil or military. A
higher than earthly “order” comes in
oere -to olairu and control our obedience.
The principalities of this world can neither
uru»m the cletgy nor suspend them. In
matters portaiutng to His Kingdom we
Aiuet, in accordance with rhe teach-ng of
an Apostle, “obey God rather t han men.”
