Considerably more than half a centu
ry ago there dwelt in a small borough
Forfarshire a poor widow, who earn-
a humble, but respectable livelihood
lor herself and only son, by keeping a
stall, principally for the sale of crockery
ware, in the market piace. It was a
time when gentlemen lived harder than
hey do now, and although the word
* Waterfordizing,” had not been invent
ed, the thing implied by it was greatly
vogue. The townspeople then were
not unaccustomed to the occasional
reaks and rough practical jokes of a
neighboring genitemati, who had lately
succeeded to enormous property and
peerage; and there was no particular
irprise manifested when, late one
evening, the humble stuil of the widow
moral law, which will have obedience,
will follow him to his doom. Every
crime is committed for a purpose,
some idea df future personal pleasure;
and just as surely as God governs the
universe, so surely does a crime, al
though concealed, destroy the happiness
of the future. No matter how deeply
laid have been the plans of the crimi
nal, or how desperately executed, de
lection pursues him like a bloodhound,
and tracks him to his fate.
