Or from starlike eyes doth seeks
Fuell to maintain his fires.
As old Time makes these decay,
So his flames must waste away.
But a smooth and steadfast mind.
Gentle thoughts and calm desires,
Hearts with equal love combin'd,
Kindle never dying fires;
Where these are not, I despise
Lovely cheekes, or lips, or eyes.

And the day Is dark and dreary.
My life is cold and dark and dreary;
It rains, and the winds are never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mnni^ri n .> past,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the days are dark and dreary.
He still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all;
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

SAVANNAH MARKET.
OFFICE OF THE MORNING NEWS, )
Savannah, November 17, 6 P. M. J
Cotton.—The market opened with a very good in
quiry—au gold declined buyers offerings were much
less than yesterday’s closing rates from % to %c—of
fering stock is very light ; buyers, as a general thing,
kuve been looking after fine cottons—the lower grades
are much neglected; market closed very quiet and
steady. We quote middling at 22%@22%c.
The following are the sales of the day: 3 at 23%,
(fine) 66 at 23, 6 at 22%, 2§ at 22%, 13 at 22%, 29 at 22,
20 at 21%, 47 at 21 %, 17 at 21%, 6 at 21 %, 24 at 21, 10
at 20%, 7 at 20c. Total, 265 bales.
Sea Islands.—Sales of 20 bags at 70 cents.
The receipts amount to 2,443 bales.
Gold—Buying at 134; selling at 137. Silver 10
^ cont. leas.
Exchange.—New York sight unchanged; banka are
charging higher rates on time bills. 15 day bills
taken at l%c. off „ , j, V ^
Provisions.—Holders are firm. We quote shoulders
at 14%@15%c, rib sides at 17<§>17%c, and clear
ribbed at 18%(§il8%c. There are few clear sides
offering, and prices are nominal at 18@l8%c. Hams,
are in large stock, at 10@ 18c according to quality.
Breakfast bacon is quiet, with a downward tendency,
at I9@20c. Dry salted meats are in bettor demand.
We quote shoulders at 13@13%c; short clear sides, 17
@17%c; short ribbed, 16@16%c; bellies, 15%@16%c,
and Stratford cut at 16c.
Flour.—The stock oh the market is large, and de
mand light, but increasing. The feeling in North
ern brands a little better. We quote Northern su
perfine, $6 5C(g)9; extra, $9@U, and family and
fancy, $12@12 50. Good Georgia and Tennessee brands
are in fair demand at $10 50^11 50 for superfine, $12
@13 for extra, and $12 50@13 50 for family and
fancy.
Freights.—Foreign quiet. By sail to Liverpool 7-10
on uplands. Timber nominal, offering at 36 shil
lings for hewn for Liverpool, 38 shillings to Queens
town for orders. Coastwise: To New York, % of a
cent ^ lb on uplands; domestics; $1 00 ^ bale; rice,’
S2 50. By steam to Philadelphia, %c lb on uplands;'
domestics, 75. To Baltimore bysteam, %; by sad, nom
inal; by steam to Liverpool % of a cent ^ & on cot
ton; to Havre 1 cent gold ^ tt on cotton. Cotton
by steam through to Boston, l%c lb. With quite a
number of arrivals, there is no diminution in freight
offerings. We seo no reason to look lor a de
cline in lumber and timber freights, hat with the
large quantity offering and few vessels on the way
unchartered, an advance would seem more likely.
We have to report a dullness in coastwise and Cuban
freights, due to scarcity of vessels. Several coastwise
uud West India freights have been placed during the
week at Northern ports, but few vessels arriving un
chartered, and vessels are still wanted. To West India
ports, $9 60@1O, gold. To Baltimore, boards, $9;-re
sawed, $9 60. Resawed and timber totNew York,
$11@13: to Boston, $11@13 Rough rice fifon Ogee-
chee to New York, 14c.
