AUGUSTA MARKET!
Thursday, P. M.
1 COTTON.—The market continues quiet without change
in prices, except for the lower qualities, which are easier.
Foreign Markets.
LIVERPOOL, Dec. 30.—At the date of our last Circular
advices on the 23d inst., per Canada, we reported our Cot
ton market as clo ing firmly ; since then we have daily ex
perienced a fair demand, and owing to the light import,
the quantity of desirable Cotton on show is very small;
hollers, therefore, have no difficulty in obtaining extreme
rates. The American advices received this week are not
calculated to change the position of this market the princi
pal feature being the light shipment to this country',
which will prevent our stock from accumulating to any
great extent till a much later period than usual. The con
sumption of the staple during the last six months has re
i ceived a severe cheek, and probably does not exceed 30,000
week of all des riptiat sat he present time; the weekly
average for the year proves to be 85,675 bales for the king
dom, figures which —viewing the social disturbances at
home, and the strong probability of a European war in the
spring, saying nothing of the high prices for food and the
pro pset of still higher rates—are not likely to be reached
during the coming season. We close the year with small
stocks of Cotton, mainly owing to the very light inq ort
during the past two months, and we believe that spinners’
holdings are much less than usual at this period. Prices
are now quite )4<l. ®>. higher than at the same time last
year, but, with the prospect of fully 3,000,000 bales for the ,
American crop we think our present rates are hazardous
in the long run, although the lateness of shipments may
keep us firm at about present currency for some time. .
To day the stick of Cotton proves to be abont 60,000
bales in excess of the weekly estimates, principally in
American. The tna ket closes steadily, with estimated
sales of 5000 to 6000 bales.
Thetotal sales of the week amount to 45,660 bales, of
which 85,290 are American. Speculators have taken 7,930 ,
and exporters 2,290 —leaving 89,390 bales of all kinds to
the Trade.
The imports far the same time is 16,745 bales, of which
7990 are American.

Tn Manchester no new feature exists; the business do- s
ing is of a healty character, at firm prices. j

LIVERPOOL, Dec. 30. —There has been a steady market
for Cottou all the week, and the scarcity of clean Boweds
and Mobiles at 6d.@6’ s 'd. q) B>. has enabled holders of
such to obtain a small advance, while the ful supply still
offering of the lower qualities prevents improvement, f
Again, to day,on the Brokers taking actual stock, there
was tound to be an excess over previous estimates of about r
60,000 bales, nearly the whole being American. Since this
great error was discovered the maiket has scarcely been
so steady. A fair business is doiDg in Manchester, con
sidering it is Christmas week.— Jan. McHenry.
LIVERPOOL, Dec. 80.—There has been a fair demand
for Cotton during the week, from the trade, speculators
and exporters, and the market has been quite firm for all
descriptions, but particularly for American of the current
qualities, at 6)4©6)ad. lb., which are rather dearer, g
Therehave been taken on speculation and for export 7,760
American and 2,500 East India, and 35,890 bales by the
trade. The actual export consists of 1,070 American and
2,276 East India, in all 3,346 bales. The stock proves to be
f3,u00 bales morethan Ih; estimate,so,olo being American, s
Sales 5,000 speculation and exports.
N. B.— No business will be transacted here on Monday, ji
the 2d January.— Hollinshead, Tetley Co. ,
LIVERPOOL, Dec. 80.—In presenting our annual tables
a few remarks will suffice upon this occasion. The Import
at this port is in the aggregate 17b,731 bales less than last j
year, the great falling off being from the United States, "
(259,902 bales,) whence the supply of new Cotton has been r
considerably less at this date; last year there were up
wards ■ f 200,000 bales at sea, and now only 52.554 bales.
We have 12,808 less fom the Brazils, 2,626 from the West j*
Indies, and 81,123 bales less from Egypt,(3,o23 bales at sea) -
while Peru hu3 sent us, 2,564 bales more, and the E. Indies i
175,014 bales, witti SO,SSS bales of Surat at sea for this port. *
These figures need no comment, but they are very im- i
porta” tas regards the prime source cf tur supply; it is -j
supposed at a moderate calculation that the trade holds
at least 700,000 bales less than they did at this time last q
year, and notwithstanding the various deductions for g
short time turn-outs, Ac., that tee cor sumption on the
whole has exceeded that of last year, rather more than
aoove deficiency in spinners’ hands. The actual stock j
appears to be upward of 60,090 bales more than estimated
—we don't understand by what process. A good extent
of business has been done during the week and the prices
of current qualities have been well susta’ned, particular
ly for American, whit hare about dearer. The sale-* to
day are 6,000 bales, the marketclosing steady.— Ifm. Clare -
dt Son.
HAVRE, Dee. 28.—1 wrote to you on Monday last, by
the Baltic steamer. Yesterday, the sales in our cotton
market were 600 bales. A tel* graphic despatch from Liv
erpool give us a summary intelligence of the advices
brought from the United States by the Europa steamer, of
the 14th inst.

prevail, but upon the whole, prices rerna’n well supported, J
as regards cotton.
