Small Pox.
We learn tlfat there are some thirty
or forty cases of this loathsome dis
ease at Sweet -Water Factory on the
line of this and Campbell county. —
There is a case also, some two miles
this side of Powder Springs. No pro
vision has been made by the Interior
Courts to prevent the diseases prea .ling
over the country.
• Lost and Found.—Mr. J. 11. Dodd
of Forsyth county Ga,, left his Pock
et Book on our table about the Ist of
March. lie can have it by application
at this office.
Troubles Accumulate.
With extraordinary energy sustain
ed by immense resources, the South
has waged for two years the uncqrfhl ■
contest. Without scarcel a murmur
her people have borne the deprivations
one after another, of the comforts to
to which they had been accustomed,
an 1 not until the fear arose that food,
essential to life would fail, has appear
ed any wavering—any doubt—to dis
tract and confuse the popular mind.
Whether the uninvaded districts of
the South can, this year, produce
enough provisions for the subsistence
of another year, is a problem which
o Statesmen should be able to solve,
'ihey know the populat.’on, in the ar- .
my and at home to be feu.- I hey can
approximate from the census the!
amount, in ordinary seasons, the Con-.
federacy is capable of prod icing.
They can approximate the laboring!
force withdrawn and the force remain-'
ing in the cultivation of the soil.
From such data the resu’t miy be an
ticipated.
Did w * not believe that the tribe of
speculators are governed by unreas
oning instinct——by blind impulse—w e
should conclude that they had solved
the problem, and anticipate a famine.
Until recently they have kept aloot
from the necessaries of life: now they p
have bought, or Jure buying up, every- .
thing essential to the support of lite, J
and have already carried prices bet ond
the reach of a largo body of consum-1
era.
This turn in speculation may re-uit i
from the anticipate I approach of fu.u
iue; or from a distrust of Confederate;
furreikcy-. or from both combine 1. *n i
eitlrer case we do not apprehen I the
B a<mcitv of the speculator. If famine
comes the people w-11 seize their pro
visions, “Self preservation is thy frst
law of nature.’’ li’ the currency fails
the”umvcrnment must seize their pro- !
visions as it cannot otherwise 'sustain I
the army. .
Prices are rapidly reaching tnai
point where jn».ny consumers must
help themselves or perish, k lour Mo
lasses, Sugar and Bacon are beyond
the ability of many to buy, Rice lias
advanced to 25 cents per. lb- and Corn
is held at §4 per bushel. The recent
demonstratiod in Atlanta should warn
speculators of the inevitable tendency
of this action. V» hile speculation was
confined to articles of luxury or to
clothing, the evil could be borne. M c
could reflect that the Soldier had the
earth for his bed a blanket to cover
him, perhaps, and often half clad, was
exposed to all the inclemencies of na
ture; and we too. could participate in
his sufferings. Bui when you begin
to speculate in, and hoard up food,
necessary t« life, and which the sol
dier and the people at home must havei
or perish you are bringing upon your-,
selves the most awful retribution!
which can afflict society. !
Our advice to you is “hold back ,
nothing essential to subsistence, for >
higher prices.” Throw everything',
possible upon the market. As there i
is an abundance until a crop is made
we will thus escape the evils which
must otherwise result from suffering.
