lie procures the grtnihie ptmeiiin guano

the risk of. dunuiiercial inanipubition, and
‘peculating imposition. Willi this he mixes
e*iuni parts of I'aw-bone and land-plaster—

Thus prepnfW, With bis guano distribu
ters, before mentioned, giMged to dialribute
the desirvtl quantity, he puts in from !«•<* /mn-
ihul amlli/lft lo three hundred pounds to the
acre, according to the strength or necessity
.d ike land. *
As before stated, this deposit is at the bot
tom of the deop furrow, and hcdtlcd upon
with the Watt plow.
As soon us a field is thus prepared—and
they are Aot mero patches, Im! broad plains,
containing from olio hundred to eight hun
dred acres,—Ilia wholo force returns to the
first row, the plows are laid aside and the
planters and harrows takellicir places. The
planter and barrow being both tight, and re
quiring but little exertion to keep them on
llie center of the bed, the mules and negroes
seem to regard the work of planting os only
pleasant exercise, and by the time the field is
gone over, arc rested and rolruslied for the
heavier labor of laying oil. fertilising am
bedding the next field.
Perfect system guvcrmi cveiy movement
and the intricate machinery of a Navigator’s
• hi oiione tor run-'n ilh scarcely more order,
pretdssfou or certuinty, while the orgnnim-
lion and discipline of the labor ia equal,
all v. --ential respects*, to the highest standard
ot military regulation.
When the col toll is ready for the sw.-.i
as deocrihcd ia 4»*r first article, the sweeps
are numbered from 1 to 40, f»0 or 6rt, ns the
case may be, and No. 1 takes the first row
planted. No. 2 follows in the third row, No
.'5 in the filth row -and so on till the last
sweep is entered. No. 1 leads nfid No. 2 fol
lows at a distance just sufficient to allow No.
1 to turn uif he - No. 2—drives out at the
cud of the row. No. 3 follows No. 2 at the
same distance, and so of nil the rest.
This regulation is very like a military
movement, and those who remember the
drill of the UiWuUiou will nl once recognise
th« AW..Ion monoerre. When No. 1 has fin
ished his two rows he drives across the head
of the rows till he passes No. 10, if that be
the number of sweeps, and lakes the next
row, mid as each, In succession, comes out
|m follows No. 1, and again leaving two rows,
lurks in, and the same beautiful echelon fig
ure i* repeated, and ra-repeatcd till the
feuce on the opposite side of the field
i > reached.
When the crop is gone over with the sweeps
in this qny, they return to the starling place,
and the same order is repealed—the same
numbers taking the .*muc rows as before.
No. 1 is revnirrd always to go ahead, and
none are permitted to drive in advauce of
hiui; nud the hhuic rule is observed to the
end of tha line—each keeping next to, hut
not YelUug ahead of, the number uext pre-
cotUnf.-tiiiUi-jtor-failing-Uf Irin J-4ho—naxi-be.
This confine* Wiry No. to his own appoint
ed rows throughout the plantation, and from
the Irak to the laslgoing over, and enables
llie munigtr at’n glutieo lo discover the
slothful uud detect the careless. Every
number must keep in ill place, or the chaiu
is broken, uud the figure is so umrred that
the machinery jars and jostles, and the cause
ircaaily traced.
est manner, respect-

from the views lie expresses in this matter.

question; With no market at Brunswick,
would it be reasonable to claim tho business
and travel of Albany for that road? If
there were no 8 U & Flo., road, the M. & u

aud with the 8. 0. & Flo food completed it
certainly caunot. We freely admit that after
the completion of the U k A road, the 8 0

WELCH’S COLUMN.
Though theoretically plausible, in its pracli
been fonnd totally iuade-
tlie two roads whereby the freights on the
Brunswick k Albany road may ho diverted
from Brunswick and shipped to .Savannah.—
Thus the Brunswick A Albany road would
become a branch of the Atlantic k Gulf road
and Brunswick, with her splendid harbor still
left without capital or resources."
We know nothing of llto arrangements al
luded to in this extract, and, though wo do
tint think Havuntiah can hold this trade
against the natural advantages of Brunswick,
wo have no war to inuko with tho AHieyuif
on that point and accept the statement as re
liable. So llto very important advantages
wo anticipate from the B A A road nro se
cured to Georgia we cure but’little as to
what particular point they are received at.—
Suvauuah with her capital, uud Brunswick
with her geographical aud local advantages
uro free to contend lor the prise. We speak
for the interests of Georgia.
Unfortunately in tho earlier Ituilruad en
terprises of I ho Stuto tho lines were located
more with a view to immediate benefits, than a
wise consideration lor their ultimate demand
and advantages, and with all her length, of
railroads Georgia still requires u more direct
and shorter lino of transportation between
her seaport uud tho Western portion of tho
Btate. Wo have not ul hand the means ofgiving
exact distances but will fairly approximate
tlirmaa nearly us we can.
The completion of the Bruuswiuk k Albany
road will put Helmu, Ala—the groat poiut for
contention between Georgia uud luoru North
ern Hiatus, for thejjusiuess of tho line of roads
running west from*there lo Yioksburg, Slirevo
port and nltiuinloly the pucitio coast—within
about -BK) miles of Brunswick. This will
tnnko a road from Selma via Columbus, Miss, j
to Memphis necessary, which will bring to I
Georgia tlie trade along its line, one of tin* -
