it is Mill Yankeel Yaqkce! Yankee! The
editorial staff should promise all that could

Maine lo California. Two more antagonistic
elements never entered our cranium than
Harriet Beecher Stowe and Donald G. Mitch
ell. ft seems almost like tha dawn of the
Millennium to see these names associated in
the direction of a popular newspaper. Verily,
as if the lime drew near when the “wolf
shall dwell with the lamb," or had already
come for “Hie weaned child" to “put his
hand ou Hie cockatrice's den.’
The eharacterjJ of the two could not he
more titly contrasted than by their famous
literary productions, ‘‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin,”
aud tho “Reveries of a Bachelor.’’ It

But of lkc Marvel —what shull wc uny ?—
Wc look back through the years gone by
with humid "eyes, aud our voice grows
husky uitd our lips 11 emulous as we recall the
tender pathos of the llcverict of a Bachelor.—
Aud “Droatn Life"—what a beautiful lifo it
was! How lYcquuutly the dainty volumes
were interlined. How fearful were wc that
kindred hearts would, iu tho after perusal,
fail to oatoh some tender thought or fueling
Loving eyes followed our own over each pure
page, and busy pencil left, the book rich iu
murginal dottings aud pointers dainty aud

This is marvelous, hut not ut all like our Ike.
Neither is her assertion that tho St John's

All this is as new, as true, and as plausible,
is she is accustomed to make her Assertions.
As good as could be expected of one ho giv

She is not exactly lo the “maimer horn**

She is quick of perception, and has already

Here wo .unravel Ihe mystery. Here

the magic baud. She may again live to see
“the greenbacks com© down in showers,
when the negroes will subscribe for papers
ami magazines aud lie “callers for looks ot all
surto." At lliis last call Harriet’s • “genius'
will blaze—she will be able to till the hill.
In Ihe meantime, Harriet, there might be a
faster sprinkle if not a shower of greenbacks
if you would dispense the “welcome words"
which nro so grateful lo your feelings ; and
observing.the “spirit of the8outhem Press,
cense saying unpleasant nnd untruo things
of the people who would gladly forget that
you Hat#d, before you knew them, and that
the first lesson you taught them, was to hate
you in return.

As we areulHietcd with similar grievances,
we publish the following report of the t’o-

to show why the Brunswick & Albany It.
It. should not (?) be built, and .why the Cen
tral, Southwestern, aud A & <1 It. It. should
eqjoy perpetual inouopoly.
Mbxtinu or Bjauu or Tu.um—Huront
Conckhniko Fbkiout Linkb.—'The modiiiit
of tho Board on Wednesday night was well
attended. Some thirty of the lending busi
ness men of Columbus were present. Col. W
L Salisbury was chairman. The question of
freights being up, Col Owens, tho general
ugent, presented the claims of the Atlanta
and Gulf Railroad Line.
After he had concluded, Judge It. M. linn-
by road the following repor* and resolution,
which ou motion waa unanimously adopted
and ordered apread on the minutes :
As members of the Board of Trade, and
merchants of Columbus, wo deem it our duty
to eall Ihe nUsntiou of merchants and ship
pers of Columbus nnd vicinity to the reopen
ing of the transportation line known ns the
Bainbridge Route. Col. Owen, tho general
agent, is now in our oily. And is willing to
agree upon a rate of freight from this point
to and.trbm Now York ami Savaunah that
will be equitable nu.l not exorbitant or dis.*
criminating.
It is well known that our only freight out*
let and inlet for many months litis bean
through the tiootbr West era R. R., which
road haa not only charged exorbitant and
ruinous rales, but disorimiuated against our
section to aueh an extent ns In enuso large
amuuntR of rollon to seek other markets,
theroby losing to our merchants thnt trade
which necessarily follows the cotton. This
discrimination in favor uf other places, com
pels our planters to nell their cotton nt half a
cent less than markets one ’ undrrd miles
further from Ihe worts than Wc are. As an
instance we would cite Ihe freigLts uu cotton
from Mongomery, Ala., and inis place to
New York, viz :
From Montgomery $1*40 per 1<") lbs
“ Columbus 1.80 “ •• ••
This rate )m 40c per hundred less from
Montgomery lo New To A,' than from Colum
bus to New York, although Columbus in to.)
miles nearer New York. At one lime tIti.s ,
season, shippersoould send coUcit from this
point to Montgomery [paying local rates),
and then ship to Now York through this
place at less rates than direct from here.—
The same discrimination exists ns regards I
merchandise, which enables Montgomery'
merchants to sell their goods and wares nl ;
less prices than Iho Columbus merchants. Ill
therefore behooves our merchants to be on '
their guard and protect their interests, by se-
curing to (lie Bainbridge route, a business!
that will enable it to continue its connection !
with this point. j >
We feel confident that the South Western
Railroad Will contend strenuously for her
monopoly. She has the money and will
fight to the end. She will reduce freight to
sfloh low rates as will be unprofitable to her- 1 I) I U
self or the opposition, thinking that fuch n I
course will, kill off the Bainbridge Route, j
which result, if accomplished.' will redound j
to our Injury, as the South Western Railroad
will make us pay, and pay dearly, for her
losses by the low rates she temporarily gave
us.
Assoonasthe opposition is withdrawn—
whieh it will be unless supported with living
rates by our merchants—freights will return
to, If not exceed the tates we have been
groaning under the past season. Is it not
better fo pay a reasonable and. fair freight
rate all the time than to acoept the very low
rates that wjU bp offered hy the Southwestern
Railroad temporarily? We think so, and
deem Uthe duty of our merchants fcnd ship
pers lo sustain the Bainbridge Route, al-
though the South Western Railroad may
ten^tt us with her exceedingly low rates.
