Dr. J. Dit.vDF4Li.i»—Dear Sir: I take idea-

used, with equal success, on a servant girl of
my brother in-law, Prof. Rutherford, of
Athens, Ga. This woman had, I think, been
diseased for six years. She was a house ser
vant, nud seemed cured, up to the lime of

io retain land for extended and profitable op
erations. Email farms—except as truck
patches—never can he remunerative to a man
of enterprise and capacity. They will not
justify the use of costly labor-saving machin
ery, ami without that they cannot compc'.e
With large farms. The reasons Hated for
large farms in the North are applicable here
uiul everywhere. Wc subjoin those reasons,
■'is given by tho Funner:
lit the North we have had the reverse of
almost everything that took place in the
Mouth. I'ur farmers have been growing rich,
and accordingly collecting means to go into
farming on a more extended scale. The
scarcity of labor timing or since the war Ims
had the cllect lo bring out every kind of la
bor saving machinery. Inventive ingenuity
has produced a machine for doing almost
very kind of farm labor that wus once per
formed by the hand alone. A tnachiuedrops
mil' corn, covers, hoes and harvest* It; while
the present season has perfected auother con
trivance that may pick nud husk l ho corn. A
machine sows our grain or drills it,on ground
plowed by a gang plow, while others reap,
bind, thrcbli and winnow it. ('utlinghny 1ms
become almost as much a mechanical opera-
ion ns making cloth—since it is cut, spread,
raked, loaded and slowed away all by machin
ery.
Now, wlmt Is the tendency of labor-saving
machines? Large farms, ns n mailer of
course. A man will not buy n liny tedder
who has but a few ucres of grass lo cut. For
a corn patch of a doxcit actcs lie docs not
waul a corn planter, gang plow or sulky culti
vator. 1'erhnps vve might state the case clear
er iu this way: Manuel labor is profitable
in comparison with the amount of land that
it can be used on. Consequently the larger
the farm and (ho greater the amount of urn
chinory, the more profitable it will be. In
tact, the question must soon be met, can fifty
? mall farms, with little or no machinery, com
pete successfully with one fnrmcr who owns
as much land as nil of them, and who 1ms
abundant machinery for working il ?
Hut there is another cause which exerts a
powerful influence in favor of largo farms.—
Since machinery has removed the drudgery
from farming, and railroads have made prices
of every kind of crop remunerative, men of
mind nnd means have selected agriculture ns
a business in which to employ their talents
and meuey. Wc have millionaires, scientists
and literati now engaged in the occupation
which a few years ago wus cousidetcd so de
eding. These men nro not content, nnd
never will be content to farm it on a small
scalo.
Mpcdi iltics in fnrmiug will also tend to
produce large farms; but when a man's at
tention is devoted to ono thing hie succesj is
much more probable than when it is divided
among a dozen; aud success in business
means expansion in business. Already spe
cialties iu farming are fust becoming the
rulo* men are not farmers in the old sense of

their pursuits that thoyumy give what remains

A tear of joy, but not of pain,
Of hope, but not of fear.
