Mayru’s Counbu .- Mr 3 Mayer, who pre
sides over this iinmeuse establishment, has
just returned from Europe, whither he went
early in the Summer lo make purchases for
this market. Whilst there he visited the
principle manufactures with s view to fa<»
miliarize himself with the faulitiea and ad
vantages of direct trade, as well as for tho
purpose of purchasing from first-hands. His
inquiries were esiisfaetory, and ho purchased
heavy bills in many of the most important
departments. These goods, together with
vast invoices made at the Factories iu Amer
ica, 1*3 is now receiving and opeuing daily,
and judging from the throng of customors in
his store yesterday end the day previous,
the people have already found out the great
vsrie'y of his stock, and tho low prices at
which he is soiling.
It is exceedingly gratyfiing to kuow that
onr Southern merchants are beginning to
see through the mists of commercial imbe
cility, nnd faking steps to free themselves
from the thraldom of New York domination
Mr Mayer is testing the feasibility of diroct
trade with Europe, and if wearo not greatly
mistaken, others will he compelled to follow
his example, or fall behind in the grand
trauip of the commercial revolution.
