The main debate in tire Senate on the Judici
ary bill has commenced. It will probably en
gross the Senate's attention till It is finally dis

gressing on the Tariff bill—its committee, it is

riff bill -would supercede its necessity.

rible atrocity of coercing a State—a Sovereign
State ! All the notice we shall take of this ex
pression at present is to say, that it shifts the
question—it is delusive ! The present Constitu
tion does not like the Articles of Confederation
operate ou States alone—it is made to operate
on those individuals in finy of the States, who
.disobey the laws under whatever pretext. En
actments tinder it are expressly the supreme
laws of the :Land, any .thing in the Constitution
,and Laws af any State to the contrary notwith
iStfthdjr.g, and those individuals, who expect to
screen themselves from the penalties of the Su
preme Laws by taking shelter under State pre
)tensiqpß, i or alleging superior allegiance to State
'authority, will jfind out their error to their irre
trievable cost. The new-fangled theory, that
a citizen owes his allegiance to the GeneraLGov
ernment only as far as the State authorizes it,
and that the State can withdraw it at its pleas
ure, and thus coyer the treason of the discontent
ed, will find a full refutation in the indignant
voice of the nation and the almost unanimous
determination to give the Laws of the Union su
preme control over all its R i s „
plausible sophism and that is all, invented for
the occasion, and necessary to give a coloring
of reason to the mad projects of the South Caro
lina rebels. It is consistent with their plans i
bnt utterly inconsistent with the security of the
■Union and its exemption from the most frightful
disorder. It allows every State to secede at its
pleasure—in othei words to obey the laws or
not. Wbat kind of Government must result
from the perfect liberty of its members to do as
their whims or passions indicate-obey or diso.

terms—the highest absurdity of political folly.
These politicians, while they aim direetly at

practice, they would blow up the Union *nd
scatter its dishonored fiagments on the winds—
yet they pretend to claim for their schemes per
fect conformity to the Constitution the very
safe.guards, which are to save that Constitution
from irretrievable yiolation ! We never knew
so gross an outrage op common sense—go bare
faced an attempt to cheat men of their reason
and make them the blind instruments of their
ow and ‘b eir country’s ruin. May Heaven
save that country from the infatuation !
