AUGUSTA.
MONDAY, FEB. 11, 1833.
The Abbeville food folks call the Cockades,
worn by the Nullifiera, “ King's Crowns.” Well
said.
Their argument! The Chronicle notices the
boys’ frolic last week in removing hii sign board,
With the sign-boards of several others, and pla
cing them in ludicrous situations. He does not
say, it was “ Northern Influence,” but means so.
llis was found—Where ? He says, half a mile
off. But where 7 We are told, at the Jail.—
This is premonitory. The Sarpenls Will all be
put in cages.
We have received nothing more from Charles
ton than we publish from the Courier af Friday
last relative to Virginia mediation. Mi. Leigh
we suppose is wending his way back to Rich
mond, inusing ovet the failure of his overtures
and its probable cons< qdettcea. If Congress
does not remove the Tariff or act therein to
please President Hamilton, he is to convene the
Convention to consider the question of seces
sion. If that question is decided in the afiirma
tive, they have most kindly agreed to refer it to
the people for their consideration also. There
we will meet these disturbers of their Country’s
peace with assurance of triumph. The question
is now stript of all its delusive trappings—it is
nakedly, Are you for Union or Disunion ? They
have so shifted flora one tiling to another, we
scarcely ever knew where to find them. We
have, therefore, kept up an everlasting kuock
ing-about, iu hopes to hit them somewhere.—
They now thuu the resistance to the laws, in
which their chivaliy was to be so conspicuous,
and start an entirely new question, that of se
cession. We are sorry they are such slippery
fellows, fpr we really thought, we had them fast
enough—fight we thought they would ; but no—
'they are off again. Put a Chicken on your
buttons.
[Since the above was io type, we re-,
-ceived the following:]
We feel authorized to state (says the
Chaileston Mercury ofSaturday last) that
the rumor published in the Courier and
.Patriot,oi the unsuccessful result of Mr.
Leigh’s mission is altogether without au
thority. The reply given to Mr. Leigh
will not be published until it has been
communicated to the authorities of Rich
mond, where the Virginia Legislature is
still in session, and may act upon the mat
ter before they adjourn.
Head, and Blush! The following is from n
British paper published in York, Upper Canada.
It shews how South Carolina’s conduct is con-
siilered, and what anxiety is felt in England in
regard to this country, and how ardently they
wish to see our most sacred institutions destroy
•ed in the severance of tills Union ! IJMtead :
“ The long expected and much wished for in
telligence from the United States has arrived
(What is it 7 Read on.)—" The blow has been
STRUCK WHICH FOREVER SUNDERS THE UNITED
States ” (All this to >) for the future presperi-
Jy °f Great-Britain and an inglorious comment oji
man's capability of self-government."
Let the traitors read, and tmnhle ! They
cannot blush. A swift iudignation shall over
take them—the righteous indignation of a peo
ple, whose interests they have betrayed—with
whose liberties they have trifled.' In aid of such
ft party in this State, aye in this City, we are
called upon to publish the assumption of their
Jacobinical emblems—their revolutionary cock
«des! Nullification blossoms ! Serpent Mot
toes ! ~in was first introduced into the world
under the semblance of some sort of a Serpent.
•People of Georgia, you have not be.en without
warning. We may have cried, Wolf! so long
and so often, that our voice is no longer heed
eil. But have we been mistaken in our estimate
ot Nullification ? Have wo not to,ld you plainly,
that its end was disunion, and that disunion was
the object of its prefessors 1 Have We not ap
proached the brink of the precipice ? Is not the
mask thrown off, as the people have been drug
ged into such madness, that they can now look
jmo the damnable gulph without horror 1 What
is the state of adairs? South-Caroliua now calls
for a general Convention —lt is easy to “ call
spirits from the vasty deep; but will they come ?”
Ihe constitutional number necessary to call a
.Convention of the States cannot be had ; and if
it could, the decision would be against South-
Carolina on every point she urges. This coim-.
try will not relinquish the protective principle—
it might as well give up the right of self-preser
vation. But this is South-Caroliua’s side qua
non. What then will she do? Mr. Trunbull
said for her, that she would abide the decision
or not, as best suited her views. She has since
said she will not obey certain laws of Congress—
they shall not have operation within her limits—
and if obedience is attempted to be exacted, she
will dissolve at once her connection with the
coafederacy —she will settle. What will be the
cansrquence of this course f She will be either
coerced as a rebellious member of tha govern
ment, or allowing her secession, she will be con
quered, as a foreign nation under the law of na
fians. An independent station in the heart of
the confederacy will net be tolerated one mo
men* every consideration which form's the pol
icy of nations will justify the course. But you
say the other Southern States will take part with
her. Allow for t |, e argument’s sake, what
we do not believe-VVhat is the consequence?
Just jwhat we predicted of this beautiful scheme
to destroy a nation’s happi ne g t __D IBUNIOS —the
array of several neighboring confederacies in
an attitude to enjoy the constant pastime of cut
ting each other’s throats ! \V e give no gloomy
picture.—We meat* we do not mat* i, gloomy—
they are its own native features— we have not
added a single shade to their datk outline.—
Heaven forbid, that what we predict as the inev
itable consequences of this mad policy, may not
become History ! We wish not our country
deluged in blood, that we may prove true pro
phets. We have done all, that our humble means
allowed, to avert the coming calamities. Come,
if they will, we shall meet them in the same fear
less patriotism that has governed out Warnings.
We will rejoice at the return of peace' to our
country; but we are ready for any event, and
the hand that executes the laws shall find us
BSaltWly “ aiding and abetting.”
"The Serpents” are out bafore spring. It
is true the weather has been uncommonly beau
tiful; but we thought the temperature wag too
low for such a phenomenon. The Chronicle of
Saturday thus announces their appearance:
BLUE COCKADE.
The following resolutions were adopt
ed at a late Meeiing of the “ Georgia
State,Rights and Free Trade Associa
tion.” Our brother Editors throughout
the State, are respectfully requested to
publish them,
“ Resolved, That the members of this
Association, and of all similar Associa
tions in this State, A all other persons
friendly to the cause of State Rights
and Fiee Trade, be'and they are hereby,
respectfully recommended, to hoist the
Blue Cockade, aS the general b idge of
that cause.”
“ Resolved, That this Association does
hereby adopt, as its Emblem and Motto,
a Rattlesnake, prepared to strike, with
the inscriptions, “ Noli me fangcre and
“ Getivrous in its warning but deadly in
its stroked*
"HOIST the Blue Cockade"!! !
(luere lit. Where is it to be “hoisted 1 ”
Probably on a liberty pole. It would be rather
an "Irish hoist," to wear ft on a hat.
Qu. 2d. 1* the “ emblem and motto" to be
“ hoisteil” too 7 If so, they must print it on the
Cockade, bodily : for no button, of ordinary di
mension*, will ever contain the inscriptions,
snake and all.

more apt emblem of nullification than a cabbage
