confidence. They have done Jbeir duty, like
upright men, in the face of your feneraies. Who
denounce* them? Your friends or your enemies?
Are they not those, whose designs they blasted,
last summer, when it was intended to difl'use
over your fertile territory the blighting atmos
phere of that deadly Upas, which has spread
such desolation over the fields of your neighbor?
What has lessened the charm of that eloquence,
which withered the vigor and your ene
mies in the Representative Hall last November?
What has alienated the 35 000 freemen, who
recently bore Wayne on their shoalders, so tri
umphantly over his and your enemies? Noth
ing. The demonstrations of a few reckless agi
tators cannot deceive the people by the scenes
of disgraceful violence to which they have resor
ted. There is a preservative, principle of good
sense and of unbroken attachment to the Union,
which will save Georgia from the designs of
these Jacobins. Let the Union Parly stand firm.
If they do so, they have nothing to fear. They
must triumph, and see that flag, which is so rude
ly scouted from the public celebrations of our
neighbor, continue to beckon the oppressed of
all nations to the home of the brave and the
free.

(government Deposits. — We understand the
much talked of measure of with drawing the gov
ernment deposits from the United State Bank
has at length been accomplished._ What is more
remarkable, this has been done, not by the or
der the President or Secretary of Tieasury, but
by an order of Cougress adopted by a very
large majority ofbotU Houses. And this not
whithstjinding the House of Representatives vo
ted at just about the same time by an equally
large majority, that the deposits might safely re
main in the Bank. If any thing can add to the
remarkable character of this remarkable trans
action, it is that no other place of deposit has
been fixed upon or is likely to be, and that in fact
the very balances hava disappeared altogether,
having been paid *othe merchants os return du
ties under the 18th section.

SLAVERY IN THE WEST INDIES.
The following article upon this impor
tant subject, is from the Globe of Feb
uary llth :—?
The standing Committee of the West
India Body assembled on Thursday, at
the desire of the Ministry to receive an
official communication. It was a Trea
sury minute, but much too long f«r in
sertion. The only points of general in
t'erest were the announcement that the
lyibiic feeling was every day stronger
i’n favour of an early abolition of slavery
—that all investigation into the question
tended to raise the opinion still stronger
against the planter—that the Ministers ,
would not move the renewal of the com
mittee of investigation of last session ;
nevertheless, if tho West India interest
brought forward the question of the re
appointment, Ministers would not op
pose the motion. The reply of the
West India Body was that they invited
investigation, and were at issue with Min
isters as to public opinion ; there was a
decided reaction in their favor.—They
requested another interview with Minis
ters, to receive a communication res
pecting the plans to be btought forward
by the Ministers, and a request that tho
West India packet might be detained till
they could communicate something deci
sive on the question, otherwise that a re.
hellion among the slaves might take
placet The two latter have been ac
ceded to ; so rests the question at present.

Cotton.— The receipts of tbe week are 4,421
Tales, and the exports, including a cargo omitted
in our last review, are 4900 bales, which leaves
the stock on hand including all o i shipboard not
cleared, 36,182 bale*. The heavy rains which
prevailed during tfie first four days of the week,
interfered with out-door transactions. For the
last two days, however, the weather has been
favorable, and cotton has met with n fair de
mand at our quotations. About 4,000 hales
hare changed hands since our last review, and
the week has closed with a steady demand.
Freights remain firm ni j}d. to Liverpool in
American, and at 11-16 in British vessels. The

The sale of Cotton this day about 2500 bales ;
no change in prices.
“The Roscoe brings Liverpool accounts to 24th
. February. Sales of Cotton there for the last
week 144000 bales at a decline of l-Bd. The ar
rivals there in March, April and May would be
too heavy we fear to attmit of any improvement
in prices. How much more they would decline
remains to be seen.”
