And 12 O'clock, a storm commerced, which.core,

when it blew a tremendo-js hurricane or tornado
from the S. E. which lasted tfuti! after 5 o’clock
on Sunday morning. During this lime; the'roar
of the elements and the convulsion of the river,
wheke, a pilot informed us, the waves ran eigh.-
tecn feet h{gh, altogether produced a continual
noise like flic ratting of all the hose and fire en
gines nf the city running together at full speed.—
Indeed, our first impression on awaking from sleep
was, that a fife was raging at no great distance.
It Was reported that a schooner.was sunk on the
Jersey side of the isllnd, with three then on boanl,
t£ho perished. Wc have not however, been able
to ascertain ‘Jie fact, or whether any other lives
!ut*e been lost.
The mists of several sltallops went by the
board. The scb. Gen. Tike (sunk) had a’cargo
of dry good*;
