Arrival of the Florida.
ThU fine steamer came up to her wharf yesterday
morning at a very early hour—having made tho
trip in 62 hours from wharf to wharf. Sho brings
! out 90 cabin and 88 steerage passongors, and an
ample freight.
Strong Language.
Mr. Webster once remarked to a distinguished
member of Congress, from Georgia, that the stron g-
• est language was tho weakost. This appears par
adoxical enough at first, yet an analysis of tho pro
position will demonstrate its truth.
Ideas alone should bo strong. It is the intellect
displayod, and not the language in which it is
draped, that arrests attention and inspires admira
tion. To dress up a great idoa in tawdry, pompous
language, would be in as bad tasto os if one should
. attempt to decorate the Alps with shrubbery, or
' to weave around the steam engine a garland
- of flowers. Tho forco of the idea, liko the simple
grandeur of the mountain, would only be marred
by such useless trappings. So, when ono lavishes
upon a poor thought strong terms and brilliant im
agery, it is like casting a giant’s robo upon a dwarf.
It only shows tho poverty of tho thought. A Lilli-
1 putian dressed out in tho garments oi Gulliver, or
Gulliver arrayed in tho robes of the Brodignagians,
would not bo in worse tasto. Tho simplest, yet
strongest language on record, is that of tho Old
Testament. Men admire the flowing style of
Macaulay and tho gorgeous diction of Burke, but
how poor do they appear whon compared with tho
Psalms of David and tho majestic epic of Job! To
; , be Imprcasod with the beauty and effect of a pure,
straightforward, and unaffected style, we need only
read Shakspeare, or Swift, or Addison, and then
take up tho productions oi some of our favorite
1 modem essayists and poetasters.
; Mr. Webster was right—the strongest language
i - is the weakest. There is a time for all things, and
there may be a timo for strong languago; but as
general rule, tborc is no doubt but that the simpler,
’ the purer, and the less ostentatious the language,
the bettor and more effective will be the style. Mr.
Webster himself furnishes an illustration of this
fact in his speeches and writings. Intellect, like
beauty, when unadorned, is adorned the most.
Abundance of this Year's Productions.
A few weeks spent in the country cnablo us to
! say, that in no year within our recollection have tho
productions of tho earth been so abundant as in the
present. Not only has the yield of the cotton and
grain crops been large, but even the woods abound
in a superabundance of fruit. There is no limit
the acorns, wild berries, grapes, persimmons, and
indeed all the fruits of the forest. The cotton
crop will bo large—larger than that of last year-
while the com crop will bo twice os abundant. The
freshet of August did much damage to both, still
the yield will bo very great. There will be some
scarcity of bacon, on account of the drought of tho
past year, but of breadstufls there will bo tho Great
est plenty. In addition to all this, tho people were
never less in debt.
The Governor has done well to set apart a day
for general thanksgiving. Never have tho people
of Georgia had more cause to bo thankful for the
bounteous band with which an over watchful Prov-
IS idenco bos supplied their wants.
Book Notices!
We are indebted to the publishers for tho follow
ing new works, which may be purchased at tho

A Biusst Gsstikl SToat—and other tales; by W.
M. Thackeray. New York s D. Adpleton it Oo.
The always increasing reputation of Mr. Thack
eray, who has lately, for the first time, landed on
J r the shores of America, has probably caused
publication of this volume. The pieces contained
in it first saw tho light some yetrs since in “ Fra■
| . set's Magazine,” and the “ London Punch.” It is
needless to say that they bear tho strongest impress
of tho author's genius.

| Thetitlo of this grammar is complete enough to
explain its scope and objects. We believe it is
y .j. well spoken of by good judges.
McAllister the Magician.—It will bo seen
that Mr. McAllister, who some years ago drow
I such crowded bouses here during three successive
weeks, will soon make his appearance among us
'< again. He will open at the Athemeura on or about
the 8tb proximo.
Mr. Weston, tho agent of McAllister, informs
. ] os that the long list of feats previously performed,
has been enriched with several now and rare ex
periments. See tho advertisement.
The Kunkels had an overflowing houso last
night. Their performance is altogether creditable,
; especially the burlesque upon Shakspcarean read
ings. They make their third appearance this eve
ning.
Regatta To-day.—Dr. J. P. Screven and Mr.
Randolph Spalding propose to gratify our citizens
to-day with a trial of speed with four boats beiong-
j ing to the latter. The first race will come oil' at
12 o’clock, and tho second at one, in front of tho
city. After tho races are over, the Becky Sharp
and the Kate Keenan will be rowed past tho city,
to give those present an opportunity to judge of
their speed and proportions.
From a telegraphic despatch to the agents we
lenra that the Steamship Alabama, hcnco for Now-
York, arrived there at one o’clock yesterday after
noon.
The Legislature of South Carolina assem
bled in Columbia on Monday last. Mr. J. F.Pop-
penhebn, of Charleston, gave notice that he would
introduce a bill to amend the law relative to tho
election of President and Vice-President of the
1 United States.
? Ji Hon. John Bell.—Tho Chattanooga Gazette
of tho 18th inst. announces tho arrival in that city
of the Hon. John Bell, U. S. Senator for the State
of Tonnessee. It states that bo is on his way to
New Orleans, via Atlanta and Montgomery, Ala
bama. The visit is causod entirely by his contin
ued ill health.
Mr. Webster’s Personal Appearance, or exte
rior was such, his presenco so majestic and digni-
’ fiod, that probably no ono over looked at him without
being (if one may so spoak)struck with tho impre-
sive grandeur of hiBaspect—so remarkably in union
with the gigantic intellect of the man. When he
was in England thirteen years since, the peopie of
'1 * all classes, as they looked upon his majestic form,
; seemed to regard him as a man altogether the most
God-liko, and wonderful, in his mien, they had ever
| sot thoir eyes upon. “Heavens” exclaimed Sidney
j Smith—“Why, As looks like a small Cathedral!”
Another Englishman who looked upon tho colos
sal proportions of Mr. Webster with amazement,
could oompare him with nothing but a Locomotive.

face are craters of extinct volcanoes, rocks, and

Two Brothers in Congress.—E. R. Washburn
Eeq., just elected to Congress jn Illinois, is a brother*
to Israel Washburn, recently elected in Maine.
They are the sons of Israel Washburn, Esq., of
Maine. - This is probably the first instanco of two
brothers mooting together in Congress, from two
extremes of the Union, both Whigs, and printers by
trade, and both’highly esteemod for thoir talonta
and moral worth. “These are my jewels” truly the
at her might exclaim.

Tho so-callod Lemmon slavo caso continues to
oxclto goncral attention horo, and tho daily com
mentaries of tho nowspapere havo it for their cho
sen topic. Counsel for claimants havo nppoalod to
tho Supremo Court, which moots in this city on tho
first Monday in December next. The result of this
step it is not difficult, I think, under the circum
stances, t9 foretoll. Tho judgment of tho Superior
Court, in all probability, will bo affirmed; so, at
loast, is tho almost universal expectation. Moan-
whilo, fully sensible of tho judicial robbery which
has been perpetrated, a number of our citizens havo
raised, by subscription, $5,000, to indemnily tho
owners of the slaves. Whore tho slsvcs themselves
are, nobody but tho abolitionists exactly know, and
much loss does any body care. But, put it down
as n certainty that they havo gono to swell tho
number of that already-numcrous, and, of all hu
man beings under tho sun, tho moet degraded, class

Tho political world, hereabouts, is remarkably
calm just now, and, save a little sparring between
tho old Hunkers and Barnburners, not a word is
hoard on tho subject. Tho newspapers have about
exhausted tho last runnings of tho campaign—tho
Stato elections are about over, and, until Congress
shall convcno, the political caterers must have a
hard job of it.
A certain Kinkel came over to tho United States
from Germany, at about tho same time that Kos
suth did, and talked a great deal about what Aewas
going to do, in the Revolutionary business on
Gorman account. After issuing a paper currency
out west, and collecting thousands of dollars, tho
money was bagged, and off tho collector wont to
England, or some other part unknown. Tho Gor
man Revolution did n’t tako place, as promised by
said Kinkel—a largo proportion of the money has
been epent—but, according to a certain socialist
abolition print here, of whom this Gorman revolu
tionist wus an especial pet, thoao who contributed
tho funds will reccivo a dividend, of so much on a
dollar. Perhaps they will, and prehaps they won’t.

Mr. Thackeray commenced his course of loc-
turcs before the Mercantile Library Association
last evening, at the Church oi tho Divino Unity,
Broadway. This large cdifico was crowded almost
to repletion by a highly intelligent and fashionable
auditory. Mr. Thackeray’s subject was tho char
acter and writings of Dean Swift, and it was cer
tainly the most exquisite piece of biographical crit
icism nnd characterism I ever had tho pleasure to
listen to. Mr. Thackeray is a largo man, of a quiet
and gravely impressive manner, about fifty years of
age, with thick grey hair, florid face, and exceed
ingly graceful in all his movements. Ho has a
pleasing voice, and his reading shows him to bo a
thorough scholar, but without any attempt at elocu
tionary or oratorical effect. Tho lecture overflowed
with humor, beauty and eloquence, and apparently
without the slightest attempt to render it so. He
gives five more lectures, tho noxt of which will bo
on Monday evening next—subject, Congreve and
Addison.
The Cotton market has declined fully 2 a Jc.
from the highest point of last wook, and prices still
favor tho purchaser. The sales of tho week amount
to 7,500 bales.
Rice arrives freely, and tho market is without
material chango. Sales of tho week 1000 tierces,
within tho range of 4J a 4|c. cash.
Tho Dry Goods market is quiet and prices very
firmly maintained. Tho value of tho imports dur
ing tho week is $847,044, against $413,536 during
the same period of last year. The imports since
January 1st amount to $55,462,548, against $58,-
520,147 last year.
There has been quite a speculative movement in
Breadstuff's, and several other branches of tho
Produce market during the week, and prices have
materially improved. There has also been quito
an upward tendency in the Stock Market. Georgia
Gs Bold yesterday at 1091, and to-day 110 was offer
ed, but the stock was not forthcoming!
Freights continue very firm and tho rates havo
generally advanced since my last. Tho following
charters have been mado during the week: a vessel
to load at this port for London at 3s. 3d. per bbl.
for Flour; a Danish brig for Hull, (Eng.) at 3a. 7d.
for Naval Stores; a schooner for St. Kitts, (W. I.)
at 60c. per bbl.; a bark, of 275 tons, for Cardenas
and back at $2000 for the round voyage; a British
brig, of 105 tons, for Cartbagcna and back at $1.25
port charges paid; a brig, of 200 tons, from South
side of Cuba at $3.25 for molasses; a brig, of 200
tons, to St. Mark’s (Fla.) and back at $1,400 for
the round voyage; a ship from Charleston, with
cotton, to Havre at lc.; a ship from Savannah, with
cotton, to Liverpool at Id.; a Dutch bark from Bal
timore to Jamaica and London at £2 7s. 6d. for
sugar, £3 for pimento and pepper, and other goods
in proportion ; a Norwegian brig from this port to
Jamaica nnd London at £2 10s. for coffee in bags,
and £2 10a. in hhds., and 3d. for rum; a ship, of GOO
tons, from Leghorn to New-York at $5000; a
schooner, of IG00 bbls. capacity, from New-York
to St. Domingo and back at $1000 for tho round
voyage ; another of 117 tons, to the coast of Africa
at $1,300 out; one to South America and back at
8500 per month, port charges paid; another from
Jacksonville to Now-York at $7.50 for sawed
stuff; a brig, ofl50 tons, to Porto Rico and back
at $1,375; and another of 200 tons to North side of
Cuba and back at 81,500, port charges paid. There
is a brisk demand for vessels to load for California
and rates are very high for dippers. A ship has
boon chartered to take coal and lumber to San
Francisco, at $18 for tho former and $30 for tho lat
ter. The regular rates range from 60 to 95c. per
foot, averaging 60 a 75 cents. C.

Corruption In Washington.
Mr. Benton, who has recently been elected to the
House of Representatives from St. Louis, after ser
ving as a United States Senator of Missouri for a
quarter oi a century, has made a speech in tho West
which contains some important warnings. Mr.
Benton Is an experienced, well-informed, and most
pertinacious politician. His honor, wo believe, is
unimpeachable, and wbat be says, therefore, after
his ample opportunities of knowing the movements
of jobbers in Washington, should bo mindfully
m
if
Nothing/’ (ho says) “ but a rigorous Congres
sional inquiry, would explore the reports on this
subject; exposing thorn it false—establishing them
if true—and carrying the censure to individuals
which now applies to tho body. I should move
such an inquiry on tho first day of noxt session, if t
member. Nothing but rigorous investigation car
explore that depth. Jobs of various kinds nro legis
lated to applicants, and often at tho price which
jobbers themselves fix. Great purchases are made
of books, often to bo sold on the spot for a little
money. Printing contracts are made by law, often
to bo broken against law, and a douceur of $50,000
sometimes granted to tho breaker, or a now and
better contract. Documents are printed by the
hundred thousand volumes, not by book printers,
who would do it cheap and well, (if needed,) but
by editors of newspapers, nnd to make fortunes for
favorites. More than ten thousand claims are now
registered in a printed document, some of them no
doubt good, but the good with litUe chance of pass
ing, because tbo parties are tofc'poor, or too proud,
or too honest to purchase justico from the agents
who guard the avenues to Congress relief legisla
tion.
“ The root of all this vicious legislation, and the
opprobrium of our government, is a new power
which has grown up at Washington, and which
performs for legislation pretty much tho same favor
which caucuses and conventions perform ior elec
tions ; that is, takes it out of tho hands of self-con
stituted managers. Thctt are the claes of agents,
now multiplied to scores, and organized into a
body, and supplied with all the means of concil•
iatitig members, and combining interests. These
guard the halls of legislation, and create interests
strong enough to carry through bad measures and
evilargo the good, unless they will content to lend
a helping hand to the bad.
" It was tho view of such proceedings as tbeso
which induced the representative from North Caro
lina, Mr. Venable, to say in a public Bpeech at Rich
mond, Va;, that “ with money enough, any bill might
be carried through Congreee.”
If those charges of flagrant baseness are true, it is
time that a thorough investigation should prove tho
laetto tho peoplo, If they are false, the acandat
should not be allowed to remain unrebukod in the
most emphatic manner. Mr. Benton, however,
rarely makes assertions which ho is unprepared to
sustain. ■_
London Failures.—Several failures in tho pro
vision trade were announced in London on the 4th
and 5th inst. The principal houses involved were
John Ruck & Co., Joseph Stuart & Son, and C. H.
Harbcn. Tho liabilities of tbo first named are
about JC40,000. The other failures, lour or five in
number, were unimportant.
Statistics of the U. S. Census.—The N. Y,
Times notices tho Census of 1850 thus:
In respect to territory, it appears that during tho
last ten years, wo havo extended tho area of the
United States from 2,055,153 to 3,230,572 square
miles, without including the great lakes, or tho sea
bays.
Tho population gained by these accessions, „
172,000. No full returns havo as yot come in from
California, but assuming its population, partly by
estimate, at 165,000, tho whole population of tho
Union is 23/263,488. Absoluto increase from 1840,
6,194,035; increase per cent., 36.28; or, deducting
that trom the addition of territory, and the relativo
increase is 35.27 per cent.
The number of whites is 19,630,728, and tho rela
tive increase of tho last ten years is 38.28 per cent.
ThoBiaves amount to 3/204,089; relative Increase,
28.81 per cent.
Tho number of freo colored is 429,661; relativo
increase since 1840,10.96 per cent.
If we refer to tho data of previous tables, it ap
pears that the increase of the whiles in the Union
every decade since 1790, has been very cqunl; be
ing lowest from 1820 to 1830, (33.95 per cent..
With the slaves tho greatest increase wns from
1820 to 1830, (30.61 per cent.) nnd tho least, from
1830 to 1840, (23.8 per cent.) Tho averago incronso
of the freo colored, on tho other hand, has regularly
diminished since 1790; being 82.2 per cent, in the
first decade, 25.25 in too third, and rising a little '
tho fourth, it fulls in this last to 10.96 per cent. su
fact worth considering as respects the probable des-
iny oi this race.
In tho most favored country of Europe, tho Re
port elutes, tbo decimal increaso is less than 11 per
cent, per annum, whilo in tho United States it is 31
per cent, In 40 years, with tho present rate of in
crease on both continents, tho population of tho
Union will exceed that of England, France, Spain,
Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland combined.
As respects tho rate ol increaso in tho different
New England States, during tho last ten years, it is
greatest in Khodo Island, (35.57,) and loast in Vo
mont (7.59)—which is also tho least in the who
Union.
What is somewhat remarkable, the rate oi in
crease in tho great States of New-York, Pennsyl
vania, Ohio and Maryland, is less than in cither
Rhode Island or Massachusetts.
In tho wholo Union, Wisconsin shows tho great
est ratio, (890.48;) next, Iowa, (345.81;) then Ar
kansas, i 114.85;) and Michigan, (87.33.)
General Scott.—It is gratifying to perceivo
(says tho Washington Republic) that political hos
tility has not rendered tho Democratic party insen
sible to the military services of Gen. Scott. * At
their New York celebration, tho following was
given from the chair among tbu regular toasts, and
was drank amidst hearty cheering:
u Major General Winfield Scott: Ills eminent services
ts a military chieftain entitle him to the grateful thnnka
of a free people.”
Several of tho speakers referred to tho reliance
which tho wholo country would feel in General
Scott, as the commander of its armies, if war should
unhappily break forth; whilo General Walbridge
wont so lar as to express a hope that tho President
elect will recommend tho Senato to invest his Into
antagonist with tho honors of a Lieutenant Gen
eral.
False Invoices.—Important Decision.—In tho
U. S. District Court at Buflalo, Hon. N. K. Hall
presiding, a verdict was given lor tho United States
against tho importers from Canada of 73,000 feet of
lutnber. Tho importers of this lumber, it is al
leged, gavo a false valuation of tho cost of tho lum
ber, with intent to defraud the revenue, and upon
this ground the seizure was ordered.
This decision establishes that goods imported at
an under valuation, are liable to forfeiture, when
ever afterwards it may bo found.
The Hvdrograhh/c Party of tho Coast Survey,
under the immediate charge of Lieut. Maffitt,
havo finished their operations about tho mouth of
tho Capo Fear river (N.- C.) They havo gono up
to Wilmington, whore thoy will meet with Prof.
Bacue and commission, who proposo tq discuss tho
improvements of tbo river. Tho party may bo ex
pected on the Savannah river ere long.
